We were in class when the headmaster came in, followed by 'new fellow,' not wearing the school uniform, and a school servant carrying a large desk.

Hey @squirrelbrain thank you so much for all the lovely bookish gifts and postcard! So thoughtful of you; they really cheered me up this morning! The book sounds fascinating! I do love a good history book. 😀

squirrelbrain I wondered where that postcard had gone - I sent it out over a week ago! (and a week before the parcel?!) Hopefully you‘ll like the book... 🤞😘 2y

Really enjoyed this (NF) book about trips that Florence Nightingale and Gustave Flaubert made down the Nile, at exactly the same time.

Although they never met and their trips couldn‘t have been more different (one looking for a sign from God and the other looking for brothels) it was fascinating to see the similarities and differences between them.

Also - a #bookspinbingo line! (Happy Dance!)

rockpools 🎉🎉🎉 Why is this so familiar? I wonder if I own a copy 🤔 2y
Josee.lit.a.lu.et.lira That looks really interesting, thanks for the share. 📚 for me. Congrats on the Bingo! 2y
squirrelbrain How odd @RachelO - it doesn‘t strike me as a ‘well-known‘ book but maybe someone else has talked about it? 2y
squirrelbrain Thanks @Josee.a.lu.lit.et.lira ! It was a really interesting read - more so than I expected. 2y

Quite good literary novel I bought years ago and never got around to finishing until now. The back cover fell off, so I've been using it as a bookmark.

This one is from the TBR shelf but sounds rather intriguing - a fictionalised account of when Gustave Flaubert and Florence Nightingale were in Egypt at the same time.... 🤔

BarbaraBB I received your postcard Helen, so kind of you! It has been ages since I received one! 💜 3y

This was excellent! An imagined version of historical fiction. Florence Nightingale and Flaubert, both in their late 20s and not yet famous, toured the Nile at the same time in 1850. Though they never met, this book imagines what it might have been like if they did. Despite not knowing much about either person or Egypt, I loved this. It‘s beautifully written — the author is a poet— and haunting.
