Catching up on #Bangladesh reading for #FoodandLit which I almost completely missed. Lajja (also titled Shame) is a recount of the 1992 anti-Hindu riots that took place in Bangladesh after the destruction of Babri Masjid & anti-Muslim riots in India, through the eyes of a culturally-Hindu atheist family. I am on page 112 & it is relentless.

Dilara ⬇ not directly relevant to the story and therefore a lot less depressing 😊 21h
Texreader Oh dear. That sounds pretty rough to read. 21h
Dilara @Texreader It is! I am reading it in small chunks - I need regular breathers - and also, I try not to look at the cover, which for my edition, is a young man clearly upset and crying. 20h

“It‘s a cliché, I know, but it really did start with a telephone, an empty desk and a generous new police commissioner, giving my career a gentle shove in the right direction.”

I am enjoying this book so much. Simple writing, but beautiful descriptions with oral traditions honored. I don't want to return it to the library.

I must really admire the style of Norse Sagas.

TheBookHippie Happens to me a lot with food and lit books!! 3d
Butterfinger @TheBookHippie yes. The only food mentioned in this book is dried reindeer meat and the occasional stranded whale, which I just realized wouldn't be like fish, but red meat. According to one of the characters. I found out from this challenge that I like the magical realism of some South American classics. 3d
TheBookHippie @Butterfinger I like it off and on as well- magic realism, for me I think it has to fit the culture. Don‘t they eat reindeer in Finland? 3d
Butterfinger @TheBookHippie I don't know about Finland, but they do in Norway. I made the meatballs with the lingonberry jam (It is still on my rotation-one of our favorite meals) and I told the girls it was made out of reindeer. @Texreader 3d

I made a version of suaasat - originally a seal meat stew/soup - using beef, onion, carrots, potatoes and a handful of pearl barley (also a bay leaf, some thyme & stock cubes). It feels odd having a winter stew in the middle of a heatwave, but it was nice, although prob. quite different from the authentic dish 😊 I guess I'll just have to visit #Greenland for that!
