The Camelot Caper | Elizabeth Peters
post image

I picked up the tagged book at this cute little used bookshop, the Literary Lizard, in Placenia, Belize. The owner brought many of the books from Canada, packed in suitcases! Most books were available for purchase, but she also keeps a selection for check-out. A fun find! (Though a bit warm for extended browsing - no AC 😅)

JamieArc Cute! 2y
mabell @JamieArc It was! The decor was so welcoming and cozy - I wish I‘d taken more photos! 2y
CarolynM Enjoy the book - it‘s not my favourite visit with my book boyfriend (called “Cousin John” in this one) but still fun🙂 2y

mabell @CarolynM Is this a Vicky Bliss? The description sounded like a standalone. “Not my favorite” doesn‘t move it up the TBR 😆 2y
CarolynM I‘d call it a standalone, although it‘s sometimes listed as the first Vicky Bliss (even though she doesn‘t appear🤷🏻‍♀️). It‘s a fun story, so don‘t let the “not my favourite” put you off🙂 2y
mabell @CarolynM Ha, interesting! 🤔 It does sound fun - reminded me of a Mary Stewart-like plot. 2y
BiblioLitten So cute! Reminds me of those nooksy ice cream places. 💚💕 2y
mabell @BiblioLitten It does! She did such a good job making it eye catching and fun. There were lounge chairs and tables with games. She also said she could make Italian sodas - she was talking to my husband and I was browsing, so it didn‘t really register. I wish I had taken her up on it! 2y
CaramelLunacy I don't specifically remember this one, but I enjoy Elizabeth Peters' novels, so I hope you have a good time 2y
mabell @CaramelLunacy I really enjoyed Crocodile on the Sandbank! This one sounds intriguing. Do you have an favorites? 2y
CaramelLunacy @mabell Crocodile on the Sandbank for being such a fun intro and I am very fond of The Falcon at the Portal as well. 2y

Pickpick

If you're looking for a book to take seriously, give this one a miss. But if you're just looking for a fun, slightly ridiculous romp around Copenhagen with plenty of tongue-in-cheek tropes, this may be the book for you. I've been slowly working my way through Peters's backlog and while this wasn't a new instant favorite, it was a genuinely fun time.

CarolynM While I agree it‘s not her best, I reread it on a flight to Copenhagen a few years ago, then had fun relating things back to the book (like Queen Margrethe‘s tomb (supposedly😆) and the carousel in the Tivoli Gardens) Have you got to my favourite standalone yet - that‘s great fun for comparing with the real world 2y
TheAromaofBooks Not yet, but it is on the list!! I fell in love with her writing via Amelia Peabody. So far I've enjoyed her writing under this name more so than the novels she wrote under the name of Barbara Michaels - those seem to be a lot more melodramatic 😂 2y

#BookReport - Solid reading week, as I also finished several of my chapter-a-day reads this week as well!! It's been good to get some things checked off the list, although I'm behind on my reviews as usual. Really enjoyed the tagged book yesterday - silly but fun. Lies was a solid thriller that kept me glued to the pages. The next Percy Jackson was great fun. The Sweet Life was more novel-y than romance-y which I wasn't exactly expecting but it ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) was still quite enjoyable. Just started (finally) the next installment of the Leephorn & Chee series!! However, it's almost time to start thinking about what books are getting added to this windowsill for July! 😂

I found the first book in the Vicky Bliss series by Elizabeth Peters to be just as much fun as the Peabody series. Vicky is delightful, the mystery was a fun gothic tale, and the audiobook is narrated by the brilliant Barbara Rosenblat. First book finished for #AwesomeApril.

CarolynM I want to be Vicky Bliss 😆 My favourite is 3y
Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 3y

Slightly comatose due to the consumption of a large number of Starburst jellybeans. 😅

Hoping to get a little #axethestacks reading in... but also tempted by a nap. 😬

Verity Oooooh. An Elizabeth Peters I haven‘t read! 3y
Johanna414 The Starburst jelly beans got me today too 3y

The third book arrived, @CarolynM , so now I can make a proper (and correct!) post to thank you for these fun birthday gifts! The Camelot Caper sounds really good (it‘s a standalone, isn‘t it?).

I was casually looking at the beginning of Borrower of the Night and oops ... I‘m 35 pages in. 😆😆

Thanks so much again! 😘😘

Cathythoughts Looking forward to your thoughts... 3y
batsy Elizabeth Peters has that effect, doesn't she? Sucks you right in. I haven't read The Camelot Caper and a scroll down Litsy reminded me that I bought it 3 years ago 😂 3y

LeahBergen @batsy Buddy read? 😆😆 3y
CarolynM Excellent! The Camelot Caper is a stand alone, but it introduces my book boyfriend John Tregath (or Sir John Smythe as he calls himself when he first meets Vicky in Street of the Five Moons) I thought you should have the full experience of his charms😂 Enjoy. 3y
LeahBergen @CarolynM Well, I obviously need an introduction to your book boyfriend! 👏🏻👏🏻 And I‘ll even share him with you. 😉 3y

This virus has wiped out my concentration so it feels like it took forever to read this. I finally got through it though and it's still the same zany romp I remember from years ago. I don't think I could handle anything heavy right now so this was perfect.

TheAromaofBooks I really enjoyed this series, and also the Amelia Peabody books, which I keep meaning to reread! 4y
bookandbedandtea The Amelia Peabody books are one of my absolute favourite series. The Vicky Bliss books are enjoyable but not quite in the same class. 4y

Browsing my shelves reminded me if this series. I rarely reread these days but I'm feeling the pull of that recently so I'm starting this now. I can't wait to reacquaint myself with Vicky Bliss. 😁

CarolynM I love these books. I think I need another reread of my favourite 4y
bookandbedandtea @CarolynM That one is definitely my favourite too! But it's been so long since I've read any of the series that I decided to start at the beginning. 4y

Having very much enjoyed Amelia Peabody, I thought I would give Vicky Bliss a try. I‘m an hour into the audiobook, and I‘m still not draw into the story. I intend to finish this one, but I don‘t know if this series is my cup of tea.

CarolynM This is the first one and the weakest of them - Sir John Smythe hasn't turned up yet. Street of the Five Moons is good, Trojan Gold is better, Night Train to Memphis is the best (my favourite, any way, but benefits from having read at least the other two first) 5y
mabell @CarolynM That‘s good to know! I have Night Train to Memphis in print. I assume they would best be read in order? 5y
CarolynM Yes, but it's not vital. The only reason I don't suggest going straight to Night Train is you'll get more out of it if you already understand the Vicky-John relationship. 5y

mabell Now I‘m intrigued! I might just have to continue - fortunately the audiobooks are all available in my library‘s app. 😄 5y
CaramelLunacy I have to admit, Vicky never drew me in the way Amelia and her staunch reinforced parasol did... 5y
mabell @CaramelLunacy Yes, I think Amelia is more my type of heroine 😊 5y
