I was in ninth grade when the Columbine massacre happened in 1999. Since then, many more have occurred, and the violence is only increasing. In this memoir, Dylan‘s mother shares her grief and tries to make sense of the actions her son and his friend Eric made on that fateful day. Heartbreaking.

Like mothers all over Littleton, I had been praying for my son‘s safety. But when I heard the newscaster pronounce twenty-five people dead, my prayers changed. If Dylan was involved in hurting or killing other people, he had to be stopped. As a mother, this was the most difficult prayer I had ever spoken in the silence of my thoughts, but in that instant, I knew the greatest mercy I could pray for was not my son‘s safety, but for his death.

Is Columbine a good book? Yes, undoubtedly. Would I recommend it? It‘s hard to say. It‘s a book that is incredibly well written and beyond reproach in terms of research and attention to detail… but that‘s also its downfall. It‘s scary and depressing and gory, at times. So, I guess, I could only recommend it with an asterisk: read with caution. Full review: https://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/columbine-dave-cullen-review/

This book is absolutely devastating. And absolutely necessary. Chapter 52 should carry a huge trigger warning, though. My God. My. God. I‘m nauseous.
Listening to it was awful. It cannot compare to horror those who have had to suffer through these shootings have experienced, but…Jesus.

kspenmoll Yes, devastating but so necessary to read. 1y

I don‘t know why I‘m doing this to myself. Maybe I see listening to this book a way to pay my respects. Maybe it‘s to try to make sense of this crazy world we live in—-of this even crazier country where we do nothing to stop these tragedies even though the solution is staring us right in the face. How many more? How. Many. More?!

Scochrane26 I made the mistake of listening to this & then to a 9/11 book while also reading a book about survivors of school shootings. I don‘t recommend. I do like this book though. 1y
