April #BookspinBingo card! My #Bookspin is Bourdain (excited to finally have the impetus to read this Kindle book I bought on a deal ages ago!) and my #DoubleSpin is Green Dot (an ARC I won from a Goodreads giveaway a few months ago).

Why did I read a cookbook cover-to-cover that I can‘t eat 90% of the recipes in? I‘m still not sure, but it‘s Tony. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ Is this going to be your go-to cookbook? No, unless you live in a city with access to a lot wider variety and better quality ingredients than I have in my large town, and you have more speed and fluency in the kitchen than I do. He scores point on not using complicated equipment though. #borrownotbuy on #hoopla!

Megabooks Also, it‘s a bit sad reading a family friendly cookbook when we now know his marriage was crumbling and he had started to date Asia, who was a problematic girlfriend at best. And Ariane, who is pictured without showing her face, is growing up without a dad. 😢 (edited) 1mo

This was really good, especially on audio, despite the lack of structure - it‘s really just a collection of anecdotes and sound bites about Bourdain, arranged mostly chronologically. I‘ve read so many think pieces about him that I found it both refreshing and revealing. The last sections are tough to get through, but I feel like I learned more about him and why his life ended so tragically. I miss his voice so much, still.

Worked on these crewmates while listening to this audiobook. A very impressive list of voices make up this oral biography of Anthony Bourdain.

🎧 I only know his books. I never saw him on tv.

He narrated his own books. He was a fabulous story teller. I loved this book but I found the continuous mention of his past heroin addiction almost annoying!

Full cast made it interesting!

If you want a fascinating, entertaining, fun story, read Kitchen Confidential, if you want a brutally honest expose about his personal & work life, try this.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/4

I wanted to like this book more than I actually did. Woolever talked to many of Bourdain‘s family, friends, and associates and I understand that this is an oral biography, but I needed a narrative thread — not just quotes strung together under headings that vaguely tie them together. Because I finished and it was interesting, I‘m giving it a low pick. I think it would be better as an audiobook.

My husband had a productive but wearying day in PT, so he‘s really tired. I‘m letting him sleep and am sitting here in bed reading Bourdain. I love my flowers.

There is a moment late in Woolever's bio where one of the subjects calls Bourdain a cultural journalist. For me, in addition to being an accomplished writer, this is a great way of thinking of Bourdain. Woolever interviewed numerous subjects for her work (so many in fact that there's a chart at the beginning to keep in mind their relationship to Bourdain) so inevitably there are conflicting ideas presented about Bourdain, but what is👇

vivastory interesting is the unified picture of a genuinely kind, curious, accidental celebrity who late in life became world weary & was afraid to ask for help & did not know who to turn to for when he needed it the most. One of my fave clips under 3 minutes on social media is the following one of Bourdain discovering the joys of Waffle House:

Twainy I LOVED the Kitchen Confidential audiobook! I‘ve still never seen his tv show or really know who he was but he seems like he would have been a cool person to get to know. 2y
vivastory @Twainy I know you like audio books, I think this one would be great in that format 2y
Megabooks So glad you enjoyed it! He was such a warm affable guy that I hated to read how much he was suffering inside those last couple of years. What did you think of how much they blamed Asia? 2y
vivastory @Megabooks I'm sure that Woolever had a good reason for not interviewing Asia, but I would have liked her perspective. I do think that they had a toxic relationship, but I think a significant part of the issue was that he was in a bad place in his life when he met her. 2y
