Thin Places | Kerri ni Dochartaigh
post image

💔💙💚💙💔

Canongate sent me an ARC. I appear to have abandoned everything to read it (surprise!). It‘s achingly beautiful and kind of devastating, and every page makes me want to cry.

It‘s a nature/memoir, but with politics (because if you grow up in Derry, with Protestant-Catholic parents, politics matters). A woman who left the trauma of her ‘Troubles‘ childhood behind, feels the need to return. In 2016. Yep.

Something special. Also, moths.

rockpools Oh, and the idea of Thin Places follows on from Piranesi ridiculously closely. 3y
JennyM Beautiful review. It sounds like a special reading experience ❤️ 3y
Cinfhen Gorgeous review.... I think a moth is close enough to a bird...it has wings #BirdsAndBones 3y

TrishB Beautiful words ♥️ 3y
Libby1 This was mentioned by Dara McAnulty - so went on my list. Dara‘s book is stunning. 3y
rockpools @JennyM I‘m only 25% through, but it‘s quite gorgeous! 3y
rockpools @Cinfhen 😂😂 It‘s funny you should mention that - I almost posted the contents page! In a nutshell, Part 1: Blood & Bone; Part 2: Feather & Stone. I‘m really not doing this deliberately- #BirdsAndBones is definitely a genre!! 3y
rockpools @TrishB It‘s a lovely book, Trish. Hope today‘s been ok 😘 3y
rockpools @Libby1 I want to read that! He was on the radio with Lauren Laverne (maybe) and came across SO well. Glad the book lives up to expectations 💚 3y
Cinfhen Hilarious 3y
TrishB It was ok thank you 🤞🏻 rewriting regs at the moment, I‘m alright without human intervention! 3y

You know what? I‘ve changed my mind.

My weekly forecast was looking a tad frantic (understatement), so I‘m taking @Megabooks advice (kind of. Slash and burn was a little drastic 🤣🤣) and posting a new, calm, sensible #weeklyforecast. Isn‘t it pretty?

Still all #birdsandbones @Cinfhen

Now I‘m going to attempt to translate this sense of calm to the state of the house! Might take a bit longer...

Cinfhen Woohoo!!! Nice restructuring 3y
squirrelbrain Aahhhh, that looks better! And breathe.... 🧘‍♀️ 3y
Megabooks Fantastic!! Glad I could at least help you think about which were best/most important. 😊👍🏻 3y

Oh dear. I‘m in a book pickle. I need to reduce what‘s on my plate.

Uganda -Not perfect, but really good. First novel syndrome perhaps? There‘s a lot going on tho.
Bones will Crow -Burmese poetry. Mixed bag but the author biographies are FASCINATING!

Meadowland -because hanging out in a field watching moles is the best plan right now.

Bones of Grace -A real slow-burn novel. I‘m currently on the beach, in the ship-breaking yards of Bangladesh.

rockpools That Reminds Me- I picked up another audiobook ARC before I really got into Grace. That was silly.

Perimenopause Power. Just Too Much. There‘s good information in here. Plus other stuff. Lots of other stuff. WAY too many words. I don‘t like bailing on ARCs, but....

Up Next - I want to start The Scent of Rain for #readaroundtheworld #Serbia, only I‘m craving something lighter, faster, story-based so maybe Prodial Son. #weeklyforecast

Megabooks I‘m a slash-and-burner. I‘d hibernate everything and start fresh if you‘re stymied. But maybe I‘m not the best one to ask...😂😂 3y
Cinfhen I feel like there‘s lots of #BirdsAndBones going on 😘 3y

rockpools @Megabooks I like your style Meg! Seriously considering whether to repost my weekly forecast with just one book on it!! 3y
rockpools @Cinfhen Where on earth did you get that idea? 🦅🦉🐮🦤🦕🦖😘 (edited) 3y
Caroline2 That‘s disappointing about the peri menopause book. I‘m peri menopausal now so I‘d love a good book to read about it. 3y
rockpools @Caroline2 Me too! In the event I find one, I‘ll let you know! Are you on NetGalley, Caroline? If so, do take a look. Some of the issues are me, rather than it, but it feels like she‘s thrown everything at it, & I could use some concise editing. And telling me that progesterone is like Kristen Stewart is 🤨🤷🏻‍♀️.And knowing all possible symptoms & treatment side effects is kind of overwhelming. I may skim the rest, but it‘s making me grumpy(er!) 3y
quietlycuriouskate @rockpools @Caroline2 I'd be interested in a good peri-menopause book, too. I might throw an axe at the next person who "reassures" me that I can still be sexy.? 3y
rockpools @kathedron Ffs. Please can I borrow your axe, when you‘re done? However, you‘ll be glad to know that testosterone is active, ambitious, sexy and competitive. So that‘s OK! 3y
Caroline2 @rockpools @kathedron I‘ll take the axe and some of that testosterone please as I am like a snivelling pile of emotional mush over here. 🙄 3y

#BookReport

This week‘s themes: birds and bones. There are a LOT of birds and bones in these books!

Back to old habits, I‘m reading way too many things at once.

I finished Nothing More to Lose (Palestinian poetry 😞) and Piranesi (🌊💖🤯)

I read more of and am enjoying all of the others. Not much time to read, but still trucking on through.

Have a lovely weekend, all 🌅

TrishB How weird all those bones and birds 😁 have a good weekend Rachel ♥️ 3y
batsy I think birds+bones should be its own genre and I'd like to read more of those books, please. 🙂 3y
squirrelbrain How odd! Another great week though.... 3y

rockpools I suspect there‘d be a market of two @batsy ! But I‘d totally be one of them 😉 3y
Cinfhen Haha @batsy I had the same thought ♥️looks like a great week, Rachel 3y
rockpools @Cinfhen @batsy In that case we‘ll totally have to declare #birdsandbones a genre! I‘ll let you know if I end up adding to it! (edited) 3y
