I live inland from the SC coast, but I have family and friends being evacuated because of #hurricaneMatthew. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers over the weekend. Mine go out to all of my Litsy friends effected by the storm. Glad to see the #HurricaneMatthewTBR posts out there and that you are all keeping your spirits up! Be safe everyone!

LilMamaMastro I live in the Midlands of SC but I am on the West coast right now. One of my sons lives in Charleston so he evacuated to my house (relief!). I've been so worried about everyone in "the path." Protective thoughts...... 8y

Sammie This book is one that you sort of don't know how to feel about it at first by it will stay with you for your whole life. The horror and trauma of slavery are so well explicated. Morrison deserves that Nobel prize so much. #allhailthequeen 8y

Susannah I tend not to like GOAT designations, so I'll say two *of the greatest* opening sentences in all of literature. I wonder what other writers think of their own work when they read these sentences and then go on to read how Morrison unpacks them.... Definitely two of the greatest. 8y

Little_Reader Juxtaposing the innocence of a baby and the anger of venom is what makes this opening so hauntingly effective. Pure genius! I love it! 8y
