Purple Hibiscus: A Novel | Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Pickpick

Excellent book! Deceptively simplistic but there are so many layers. The story is told from the perspective of a 15 yo Nigerian girl-Kambili. And it‘s this that‘s deceiving because she‘s so young and innocent but thru her eyes Adichie exposes life in her part of Nigeria. It‘s a beautiful story about family, religion, corrupt colonialism, traditions, revenge and hope. This is my fave Adichie book. #adichie#booknerd #booklover

The Shivering | Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Mehso-so

This short story was just so-so. It had potential to be a pick, but it fell short, and the story, while compelling, felt unfinished. #BookReview #JPBookReview #KindleDeal #ebook #deal #sale - #Shortstories #riotgram

“In this poignant, stirring short depicting the solitary lives that immigrants face in the US, acclaimed author... Chimamanda Ngozi #Adichie celebrates faith and the fragile ties that can grant salvation. An ebook short.” -Amazon

MichelleScott_author I liked her book Americanah, but it did move slowly. 6y
Jess7 I LOVED her short book, We Should All Be Feminists @Coffeeshopreviews 6y

The title is taken from the flag of Biafra, which features Half of a Yellow Sun. What an extraordinary novel. Realist fiction at its finest. Cannot recommend highly enough. Can‘t wait to read Adichie‘s other work #adichie #africanlit #africanliterature #realistfiction #realism #biafra #flawless

We Should All Be Feminists | Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

We spend too much time teaching girls to worry what boys think of them. But the reverse is not the case. We don't teach boys to care about being likeable. We spend too much time telling girls that they cannot be angry or aggressive or tough [..] then we turn around and either praise or excuse men for the same reasons.

travellingbibliophile [..] But by far the worst thing we do to males -- by making them feel they have to be hard -- is that we leave them with very fragile egos. The harder a man feels compelled to be, the weaker his ego is. 7y
travellingbibliophile And then we do a much greater disservice to girls, because we raise them to cater to the fragile egos of males. 7y
travellingbibliophile We teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller. We say to girls, 'You can have ambition, but not too much. You should aim to be successful but not too successful, otherwise you will threaten the man. If you are the breadwinner in your relationship with a man, pretend you are not, especially in public, otherwise you will emasculate him. 7y
travellingbibliophile But what if we question the premise itself? Why should a woman's success be a threat to a man? 7y

This year, I want to highlight the best books I read this year. Although they may have been published way before 2016, I'll post about them if I read them this year.

Definitely a must read if you're looking to read if you're looking for a great book about exploration of culture and identity in a new place. The characters are deep and complex and that makes a strong book anywhere
