The Exploding Whale
The Exploding Whale: And Other Remarkable Stories from the Evening News | Paul Linnman
2 posts | 2 read
The scene made cult-classic status right from the start: here's rookie broadcast newsman Paul Linnman in the foreground, reporting on a sticky situation along the Oregon coast. Officials have been working to remove the body of a beached whale, long dead and now rotting. The solution: explosives. As Linnman ducks, the skies issue forth chunks of whale meat, and Linnman's live-action reporting takes its place in broadcast history.

Mehso-so

In 1970, reporter Paul Linnman was sent to the Oregon Coast to cover a unique method of removing a dead whale: dynamite. Unsurprisingly, the story came to define his life and he eventually decided to write a book around the events with some other bits thrown in. The whale parts were fun, but overall this wasn‘t terribly engaging and took me a while to get through. If you haven‘t seen the video, though, definitely look for it!

This is less a weird book than a book about a weird story. In the 1970s in coastal Oregon, the (questionable) decision was made to dispose of a dead whale with dynamite. This did not go as planned. Read the book and/or catch the (absolutely hilarious) original story here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xBgThvB_IDQ #somethingforsept

Hooked_on_books @MandaChittles Glad you enjoyed it! My favorite part is the reporter and camera person running away while chunks of fetid whale rain down around them. 😂 8y
