1666: Plague, War, and Hellfire
1666: Plague, War, and Hellfire | Rebecca Rideal
8 posts | 5 read | 10 to read
1666 was a watershed year for England. An outbreak of the Great Plague, the eruption of the second Dutch War, and the devastating Great Fire of London all struck the country in rapid succession and with devastating repercussions. Shedding light on these dramatic events and their context, historian Rebecca Rideal reveals an unprecedented period of terror and triumph. Based in original archival research drawing on little-known sources, 1666 opens with the fiery destruction of London before taking readers on a thrilling journey through a crucial turning point in English history as seen through the eyes of an extraordinary cast of historical characters. While the central events of this significant year were ones of devastation and defeat, 1666 also offers a glimpse of the incredible scientific and artistic progress being made at that time, from Isaac Newtons discovery of gravity to the establishment of The London Gazette. It was in this year that John Milton completed Paradise Lost, Frances Stewart posed for the iconic image of Britannia, and a young architect named Christopher Wren proposed a plan for a new Londona stone phoenix to rise from the charred ashes of the old city. With flair and style, 1666 exposes readers to a city and a country on the cusp of modernity and a series of events that altered the course of history.

4 ⭐️ I ended up really liking this one. I wish that the book title was better suited to the book, as the book deals with both 1665 and 1666 and that she dealt a little more with the Fire of London than she did. The thing I got out of the book was that after the fire, the council put in an ordinance that all future homes were to be made of brick, not wood. #2021 #bookstagram #bookreview #nonfiction

I found the plague and fire sections more interesting than the war sections.

I did not know Lord Rochester's poems were quite THAT rude.

Zoes_Human I too found the fire and plague more interesting than the war. 4y

A interesting slice of popular history covering the period 1665-1666, during which the inhabitants of London experienced a major outbreak of the black death, and ongoing war with the Dutch and then the great fire which consumed much of the old city. It is understandable why many citizens felt that they had been damned, even if the cause of the damnation varied based on their political and religious beliefs.

Soubhiville Wow, what a devastating sight! 5y

‘On 7th March 1665, the English navy‘s prized warship ‘The London‘ dramatically exploded, killing 300 men and women. It marked the beginning of eighteen months of horror in England. In rapid succession, the country was struck by the Great Plague, the eruption of the Second Anglo-Dutch War, and the Great Fire of London.
