License to Quill is a page-turning James Bond-esque spy thriller starring William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe during history's real life Gunpowder Plot. The story follows the fascinating golden age of English espionage, the tumultuous cold war gripping post-Reformation Europe, the cloak-and-dagger politics of Shakespeare's England, and lastly, the mysterious origins of the Bard's most haunting play: Macbeth. You won't want to miss this fast-paced historical retelling!

I have greatly decreased my impulse book buying, but when I saw @ralexist post a review of this Shakespeare/spy mash-up I honestly couldn‘t figure out a way not to own it immediately.

Fun twists on Shakespeare are my personal kryptonite.

umbrellagirl I *need* this!! 5y

William Shakespeare and Kit Marlowe as secret agents foiling the Gunpowder plot. Macbeth is written and the Dark Lady is revealed. Quite the undertaking but this made for an excellent read in trying to puzzle out how the author Jacopo della Quercia (helluva nom de plume) would weave all those threads together. My favorite homage to the spy genre was a scene reminiscent of Bond and Q, but instead featured Shakespeare and Francis Bacon. Do read!

WanderingBookaneer @BookishMarginalia might like this one! 5y

I can't wait to dive into this. Since I'm the last to get it, it's okay to reveal, right? I've been away for nearly the whole month of June and this didn't arrive until after I had left. So that means I'm just starting my round 2, book 4 June #poutineandpaperbacks now. @drokka I hope it's okay that this will be late getting back to you. @TheKidUpstairs @CouronneDhiver

drokka No worries. Enjoy! 😁 6y
CouronneDhiver Awesome. This one was super different for me... forgot to mark it up all together. 😂 6y

1. Lately I've read a lot books set in and around London, UK and that's piqued my interest. The latest one was Licensed to Quill
2. Glen Nevis
3. Iceland, Faroe Islands, Shetlands (Nordic countries generally)
4. Usually both. Fly there, then hire a car.
5. Why limit ourselves to one? Though, I did have some choice Gelato in Budberg, Germany.

Still loving License to Quill...just taking way longer to get through it than I thought I would. But would definitely recommend it to any Shakespeare fans out there!

Well hello Litsy! It's been a while! I've officially moved to Montana, got myself a fella, sorted my job and apartment out and am finally sitting down to read for the first time in too long. Hope you are all having a wonderful holiday weekend surrounded by loved ones, delicious food, and can't-put-it-down books.

BookishMarginalia Welcome back! Sounds like the changes have been for the good! 7y

This is such a fun, clever book! It's like 007 meets Shakespeare & history. It's a well researched, fast-paced book. It's a new favorite. 4 ⭐️
