On the Calculation of Volume (Book III)
On the Calculation of Volume (Book III) | Solvej Balle
4 posts | 2 read | 3 to read
A literary phenomenon nearly forty years in the making, and a speculative masterwork (New York Magazine), Balles epic On the Calculation of Volume in Book III introduces new thrills to the adventures of Tara Selters endless November day In the marvelous third installment of Balles astonishing (The Washington Post) septology, Taras November 18th transforms when she discovers that she is no longer alone in her endless autumnal day. For she has met someone who remembers, and who knows as well as she does that it is autumn, but that were not heading into winter. That spring and summer will not follow. That the reds and yellows of the trees are here to stay. That yesterday doesnt mean the seventeenth of November, that tomorrow means the eighteenth, and that the nineteenth is a day we may never see. Where Book I and II focused on a single womans involuntary journey away from her life and her loved ones and into the chasm of time, Book III brings us back into the realm of companionship, with all its thrills, odd quirks, and a sense of mutual bewilderment at having to relearn how to exist alongside others in a shared reality. And then of course, what of Taras husband Thomas, still sitting alone day after day, entirely unawares, in their house in Clarion-sous-Bois, waiting for his wife to return? Blending poetry and philosophical inquiry with rich reflections on our discombobulating times, Balles On the Calculation of Volume asks us to consider: What is a single persons responsibility to humanity and to the preservation of this world?

Home from our holidays now, to book mail. It‘s all rather ToB-adjacent!

I ordered the top and bottom books yesterday, when the list was released. (The only two I‘ve bought so far from the longlist - I‘m behaving myself! 😝)

The Balle is a pre-order and was published this week. It was on the NBA list, as well as being on the ToB longlist.

And finally, I ordered The Turner House after loving The Wilderness, which is also on both lists!

sarahbarnes Nice! The top and bottom ones caught my eye on the list, too! 3d
sarahbarnes And I was already excited for the next Volume! 3d
TheKidUpstairs The Wilderness also bumped The Turner House onto my TBR, it was so well written! And I'm really excited for Swallows, I read Out by the same author earlier this year and loved it! 3d

Lesliereadsalot I‘ve got Swallows sitting here and waiting for my copy of On The Calculation. We‘ll have to compare notes. 3d
Suet624 I was excited to see that we‘ve already read a few of the books this summer 3d
BarbaraBB I loved Out too and am looking forward to Swallows. On the Calculation gets better by the book, I liked part III a lot but am surprised it‘s on the longlist. You really need to read I and II first, don‘t you think? 3d
squirrelbrain I haven‘t read Out, but it bodes well that you both liked it! @TheKidUpstairs @BarbaraBB 2d
squirrelbrain Yes, I don‘t think that sequels or series should be on prize lists @BarbaraBB 🤷‍♀️. I‘m still looking forward to Volume though! 😝 @sarahbarnes @Lesliereadsalot 2d
squirrelbrain We obviously have great taste! @Suet624 2d

You would think a series of books about a woman getting stuck in a time loop and repeating the same day over and over would be repetitive. Not in Balle‘s hands. These books treat the situation as a many-sided figure, with each volume contemplating a different side and somehow keeping it fresh. This one opens things up a bit and the ending sets up more of that. Loved it.

squirrelbrain My copy of this will be waiting when I get home - looking forward to it. 5d

Tara Selter is still stuck on November 18 in Part III, reliving the same day over and over again.
She has tried unsuccessfully to return to a normal, forward-moving timeline. On the final page of Part II, she meets Henry Dale, who is also trapped in November 18. Part III focuses on her interactions and conversations with him. I can‘t say much more without spoiling things but I will say I already ordered part IV!

sarahbarnes Oh wow, I can‘t wait to read this! I don‘t think it comes out here until fall. 5mo
Lesliereadsalot So jealous as you know! 5mo
Tamra @sarahbarnes I‘m preordering! 5mo
BarbaraBB @sarahbarnes @Lesliereadsalot @Tamra And again this one‘s better than the one before. So promising for the rest of the series! 5mo
sarahbarnes @Tamra @BarbaraBB @Lesliereadsalot I‘m waiting impatiently!! 5mo
