The Old Fox Deceived
The Old Fox Deceived | Martha Grimes
5 posts | 10 read
It is a chilly and foggy Twelfth Night, wild with North Sea wind, when a bizarre murder disturbs the outward piece of Rackmoor, a tiny Yorkshire fishing village with a past that proves a tangled maze of unrequited loves, unrevenged wrongs, and even undiscovered murders. Inspector Jury finds no easy answers in his investigation—not even the identity of the victim, a beautiful young woman. Was she Gemma Temple, an impostor, or was she really Dillys March, Colonel Titus Crael’s long-lost ward, returning after eight years to the Colonel’s country seat and to a share of his fortune? And who was her murderer?

I love this series. I'm re-reading the first several, as I read them when they first came out. Jury is such a sweetie, and I love how he searches out the kids and the unentitled to befriend and help.

The mysteries are complex enough that you have to work to figure them out, and the characters she creates are fascinating.

The 2nd Richard Jury novel has him in a small coastal town to solve a murder, although there's some questions over the identity of the victim. Additional pressure comes from the inevitability of the promotions panel and Jury's reluctance to advance his career. Melrose Plant again features, and Agatha is thankfully relegated to a bit-part. If you liked the first, you'll like this one, even though it's rather more firmly rooted in the modern era.

Finished another of these really good cosy mysteries. And as my bookmark attests, I did fall asleep partway through. Not the books fault! I quite like reading myself to sleep. Do you?

Aseleener Yes! The only way I can get a good night's sleep is to read until I can't keep my eyes open. Sometimes I have to re-read pages the next day. 😉 7y

Ok, I have a question for you #littlefreelibrary folks: I took these two out of a LFL by my house with lots of nice fiction. There are at least 4 other LFLs in my neighborhood that (currently, at least) have much slimmer pickings. Should I return these to the LFL I got them from, or should I share the love? Is there an etiquette I should know about? (Neither book is marked for the LFL in any way, as I know some of them do.)

LeahBergen I don't know. I think I'd share the love. Put these ones in the LFL that needs them the most. There is a really lovely LFL near me and I often put a few good books in it when it is running low. 😀 8y
