Actress of a Certain Age: My Twenty-Year Trail to Overnight Success
Actress of a Certain Age: My Twenty-Year Trail to Overnight Success | Jeff Hiller
11 posts | 11 read | 6 to read
A humorous collection of autobiographical essays from comedian and Somebody Somewhere actor Jeff Hiller, who shares his journey from growing up "profoundly gay" in 1980s Texas to his experiences as an inept social worker and how he clawed, scraped, and brawled to Hollywood's lower middle-tier. While struggling to find success as an actor and pay the bills, something accidentally happened to Jeff Hiller: he aged. And while it's one thing to get older and rest on the laurels of success from the blood, sweat, and tears of your youth, it's quite another to be old and have no laurels. At forty, stuck in a temp job making spreadsheets, the dream of becoming a star seemed out of reach. But after twenty-five years of guest roles on TV and performing improv in a grocery store basement, he finally struck gold with a breakout role on HBO's Somebody Somewhere, playing Joel--the kind of best friend everyone wishes they had. In his book, Jeff dives into the grit and grind of climbing the Hollywood ladder. It's a raw and often hilarious tale of the struggles, triumphs, and humiliations that shaped him into the wonderfully imperfect person he is today. With a mix of awkward charm and heartfelt honesty, Jeff shares his journey: growing up very Lutheran in Texas, navigating bullying as a gay kid, working as a social worker for unhoused youth and HIV prevention, and the endless ups and downs of being a struggling actor. For every one of us who have a dream that we're chasing--and chasing, and chasing--his is a funny, moving, and utterly relatable story.

I loved Somebody Somewhere (one of my favorite shows, still sad it was cancelled). I loved this book narrated by Hiller. It was funny & laughed plenty of times out loud. It was also sad & emotional as he talked about his parents. He discussed the relentless bullying he faced growing up. He also talked about how supportive & caring his parents were. Overall just a fun but introspective memoir. A must if you‘re a fan of Hiller.

Karisa Love him and loved this too! So wonderful to see him getting more of the recognition he deserves lately 😍 4d
Tamra Okay, my brain saw “If you‘re a fan of Hitler”….. 😳😆 (edited) 4d

I love the HBO show Somebody Somewhere—real and funny and tender and queer and fat and Midwestern, there‘s nothing like it and I want more! I am thrilled to share this memoir by one of its stars—and a first-time Emmy winner, Jeff Hiller! This memoir is like if David Sedaris was just as funny and risqué—but much more deeply earnest and kind-hearted at the same time. Jeff Hiller, you‘re an American treasure.

I loved this just as I loved the gone-too-soon Somebody Somewhere: very, very much. Like the show, this was hilarious, frank, sweet, sharp, and heartwarming. The perfectly performed audiobook (again, like the show) had me laughing out loud frequently and tearing up, too. I'm sure he's a long shot, but I SO wish Hiller would win the Emmy for which he's nominated. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

AmyG Thanks…I just put this audiobook on hold. 4mo

Though I love memoirs, I don't usually read ones written by actors/actresses. I listened to this book because I loved the show Somebody Somewhere so much. Jeff Hiller is as funny as his character Joel! Delightful listen!

willaful Oh, I love that show too. Think this will be my next listen. 5mo
Karisa Yes! Gobbled up all the episodes and this book on audio helped give a little closing to it all. I love that he loved it all so much too (he‘s soooo Joel)! 5mo

If you liked Somebody Somewhere (I absolutely did) Mr. Hiller really is Joel. I could hear him giggle as I read his funny stories. So very likable but also, it wasn‘t easy for him to get here. Such a decent human. Thank you NetGalley for the ARC!
