Corsica, 1993. Seventeen-year-old Sverine Guimard has always felt destined for fame. Beautiful, charismatic, and able to seduce whomever she pleases, the daughter of the French Prefect of Corsica and an American poet knows in her heart that it's only a matter of time before she'll escape this provincial island for Hollywood's glimmering lights. Until then, she'll pass the time listening to "What is Love" on her Walkman, smoking cigarettes, and riding her bike at dusk along the picturesque roads that wind around her parents' gated villa. That is until one such evening ride when three masked men emerge from an idling car, tear her from her bike, duct tape her mouth and wrists, and ferry her in the trunk to a safehouse somewhere in the island's remote interior. For days, Sverine listens from a locked closet as the three men-Bruno, Tittu, and Petru: a cell of militant Corsican separatists calling themselves Soffiu di Libert-fail to successfully negotiate her full ransom of five million francs and the release of a former comrade currently being held as a political prisoner. Left to make good on their threat to kill their hostage, the men ultimately balk at hurting the headstrong girl who has slowly begun to win their affection. Instead, Bruno, the handsome young leader of the cell, puts Sverine's flair for the spotlight to use. Force-fed a diet of Fanon and Marx, she relays scripted communiques to her parents and the French media, citing her newfound sympathy for an independent Corsica and imploring them to give in to her kidnappers' demands. What follows is a summer of passion and terror, as Sverine's radical indoctrination for a global TV audience becomes the most life-or-death dramatic role of her young life...

I went into this book blind, so I was not sure what to expect. A bored kidnapped teenager with Stockholm Syndrome? Let's just say, I was surprised with how the story developed.

Mehso-so

A teenaged girl is kidnapped in the 1990s and in a matter of weeks sides with her terrorists. To use this storyline I believe significant research into Stockholm Syndrome was needed so the reader understands and fears for and with the FMC. I liked the 2013 aspect but my frustration with the 90s prevailed.

Amiable Is this supposed to be a fictional nod to the Patti Hearst kidnapping? 2mo
marleed @Amiable I think a bit inspired by Patti Hearst kidnapping which is why I felt it was a miss in not digging more into Stockholm Syndrome. 2mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

4.25 stars. I love when #BOTM introduces me to a unique book that I may not have picked up otherwise. This is intoxicating and incendiary, capturing the intensity and impulsivity of youth. Séverine is a bright spark - a truly compelling and distinctive character who leaves an impression. What a ride!

This months #botm box (including the limited edition book!) got a lil wet on the way here. Grateful a neighbor (or maybe the mailman?) left it on the heater in our lobby. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Miraculously I saw no damage to the actual books. 🥹🤕

JamieArc They would be good at resending if that happens again. I received one with minor damages and they still sent me a replacement. Glad yours made it through! 5mo
Melismatic @JamieArc good to know!! I took a lot of pictures in case but was pleasantly happy everything looked ok 5mo

Happy #botm day! The irises are blooming, and it‘s finally sunny! The Bombshell is my #bookspin or #doublespin, so I‘m starting there.

And Kate from Kate & Frida (tagged below) is a big Colwin fan and just mentioned this book specifically!

TheAromaofBooks Yay!! Enjoy!! Fingers crossed for sunshine tomorrow - we've gotten almost 6 inches of rain in the last five days! 5mo

Aims42 My copy of “The Lincoln Highway” from them literally fell apart. I would turn a page and it would come out from the spine, just like a flower petal 😆 Their customer service is great, sent me out a brand new book and I could keep the damaged one (I taped it back up and gave it to my dad lol He appreciated the free book) 5mo
bookish_wookish Oh wow! I‘ve never had a damaged book from them before. I may just try and flatten it out because i really wanted to start this one today. @Aims42 5mo

Love the colors in my May #BOTM box!

I already read “The Love Haters”, but I gave my giveaway away and want a copy for my shelf 😊

Hooked_on_books I‘m curious about Aftertaste. It sounds interesting but I‘m not completely sure about it. I look forward to seeing what you think! 5mo

Okay, so I couldn‘t choose just four, so I threw in an extra. When I was researching options, I wasn‘t blown away, so I‘m really surprised at all the books everyone else is posting that I hadn‘t already seen. Looking forward to another great summer camp! #CampLitsy25
