The caretaker at an isolated mountain hotel finds herself fighting for her life--and sanity--in this twisty, addictive thriller. Kerry's life is in shambles: Her husband has left her, her drinking habit has officially become a problem, and though the deadline for her big book deal--the one that was supposed to change everything--is looming, she can't write a word. When she sees an ad for a caretaker position at a revitalized roadside motel in the Catskills, she jumps at the chance. It's the perfect getaway to finish her book and start fresh. But as she hunkers down in a blizzard, she spots something through the window: a pale arm peeking out from a heap of snow. Trapped in the mountains and alone with a dead, frozen body, Kerry must keep her head and make it out before the killer comes for her too. But is the deadly game of cat-and-mouse all in her mind? The body count begs to differ . . .

2.5⭐
• mystery thriller suspense • isolated setting • unlikable MCs • alternating timelines • alternating POVs •
I should probably part ways with this author, but she utilizes some of my favorite narrators, so I keep giving her another chance. Her characters are so whiny and uninteresting that she makes even my favorite narrators sound off their game. Unfortunately, the character's shortcomings ruined the whole vibe for me.

•My Score 4.54/10•

Elizabeth2 Whiny characters are a pet peeve of mine too. Sometimes, books just don't work for us! Hope your next read is more engaging and just what you are looking for! ❤️📚 4w
KT1432 Yep! It‘s a shame because this should‘ve been a home run for me! The isolated setting in a snowstorm with a writer and a murder mystery? Such a great premise. And the characters were VERY whiny lol. (edited) 4w
AudiobookingWithLeah @Elizabeth2 Well, the next one, Play Nice, was only okay, but the next one after that, Blood Like Ours, was great. 4w
AudiobookingWithLeah @KT1432 The substance-abusing woman whose eyes can't be trusted IS getting so very tiresome. 4w

Eh, this was messy, repetitive, and overly reliant on a trope I‘ve grown tired of: the anxious, substance-abusing woman whose reality we doubt. I can see what the author was aiming for with a psychological thriller examining trauma, creative burnout, and unreliable narration. But there were too many heavy topics without depth, and the plot never aligned with its twists. A few intriguing ideas, but this didn‘t hit the mark for me. 2⭐️s

AudiobookingWithLeah I totally agree with you on this one. 4w
KT1432 Ah glad I‘m not the only one who felt this way lol @AudiobookingWithLeah ! 4w

Kerry‘s made a mess of things, so when a caretaker position at in inn in the mountains crops up, she jumps at the chance to go there and finish her overdue book. A storm hits soon after she arrives and in the isolation, cold, and lack of power, she stumbles on a body. This was an entertaining thriller though Kerry didn‘t always quite ring true.

Book 9📚 3.5⭐️

A secluded motel, a dead body and a property dispute!

Nothing crazy to write home about out but still a good read.

My January 2025 #Bookspin and #Doublespin wintery picks are done and dusted.
Both were solid reads that made the cold and snow characters in the stories.
Neither knocked my socks off but I enjoyed reading both.
The tagged book was a #netgalley arc, so thanks to them for giving me a copy of the book for an honest review.
That‘s 2 more stripes on Rebecca my knitted #ReadingSnake (horror and thriller) #knittersoflitsy #litsycrafters

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! Fabulous progress both reading and knitting!! I love the idea of a reading snake!! 10mo
Kitta I love Rebecca the reading snake!! I want to make one sometime. How many books are you planning on reading? Did you follow a pattern for her head? (edited) 10mo

Chelsea.Poole This is great! 10mo
MaleficentBookDragon @Kitta I usually read between 52-63 books a year. I used a pattern for her head called Sweet Little Snake. It‘s free on Ravelry and I modified it to use DK weight yard to make her a little bigger. My inspiration is this woman‘s snake (she will be coming out with a pattern soon). https://www.instagram.com/reel/C4JSt_VvWUv/?igsh=ZTZja3FkZGZoZm1r 10mo
MaleficentBookDragon @Booksblanketsandahotbeverage thanks. I like her too. I made mistakes on her head but it‘s good enough for me. Maybe the stitches will smooth out if I steam block her. I was too impatient to block her, wait to dry , and then start the stripes. 10mo
Booksblanketsandahotbeverage She looks great to me :) 🐍 Gives her character 10mo
Kitta @MaleficentBookDragon amazing thanks! I‘ll look up the pattern. I feel think this would be more manageable than the reading tracking blankets I‘ve seen. I read around a book a week and was curious at how many rows per book you were doing. 10mo
MaleficentBookDragon @Kitta I‘m doing 5 rows for each book and 2 rows of the body color in between them. 10mo

This updated twist on THE SHINING with its unreliable narrator, set in a snowlocked motel in upstate NY makes a the gripping read! Kerry‘s husband has left, she hasn‘t spoken to her BFF in months & despite landing a dream contract for her debut novel, she still has to finish writing it! She hopes being the caretaker for this Instagram-friendly motel will provide her with the will to stop drinking & just write…but it‘s off the rails from the start!
