'Some secrets are better left buried...' When seventeen-year old Phoebe Turner visits Wilton's Music Hall to watch her Aunt Cissy performing on stage, she risks the wrath of her mother Maud who marches with the Hallelujah Army, campaigning for all London theatres to close. While there, Phoebe is drawn to a stranger, the enigmatic Nathaniel Samuels who heralds dramatic changes in the lives of all three women. When offered the position of companion to Nathaniel's reclusive wife, Phoebe leaves her life in London's East End for Dinwood Court in Herefordshire - a house that may well be haunted and which holds the darkest of truths. In a gloriously gothic debut, Essie Fox weaves a spellbinding tale of guilt and deception, regret and lost love. 'VIVIDLY COMPELLING, DARK AND DAZZLING.' Katherine Webb, author of The Legacy

Bailedbailed

This is my second attempt to read this and I‘m still not feeling it. Too many books on my TBR that I‘d like to read before the end of the year, so I‘m ruthlessly bailing just 50 pages in...

readingjedi That's a really nice cover though .... 5y
JillR @readingjedi it‘s lovely isn‘t it? Just something about this one that isn‘t grabbing me though... 5y
Maude It's been a long time since I read it but I remember it taking me awhile to get into, since I was traveling and only had it with me I was stuck with it :) Once it finally got going, I liked it. 5y
JillR @Maude I was in two minds whether to give it more time... 5y

I had this book on my wish list since forever and I had really great expectations from it. My expectations were too high, maybe, because it's not a bad book and I enjoyed the reading, even if I prefer more happy reading, but I didn't fall in love with it.
The characters are well written and Phoebe is a good heroine, yes, she's way too kind sometimes, but that's ok, and I really disliked Maud, Joseph and Mr. Turner, but they are unpleasant people!

Usually the italian edition has always a different cover from the original one (and I do not need to say that usually they are far way worse) but for this one they kept the original cover and I'm in love with it! 💖

I was searching for a book on #netgalley, and came across a galley by this author (and as soon as I saw her books described as "atmospheric" and "gothic," I was sold). I hadn't heard of her, and went digging through her backlist and ordered these two beauties. Now I'm just waiting for the first big snowstorm, a blanket, and a cup of tea. ??☕️❤️

Every year, when fall is right around the corner I make lists of all the books I want to read in this season - all the gothic novels, all the eerie and horror stories and everything victorian. I never make it through the list and often enough I don't get around to it at all, but I enjoy the ritual. This book in particular has been on this for a few years and I am just about ready to dive in.

MrBook Great pic and cover! 8y
nemesis @MrBook thank you! I still need to get a bit used to everything around here (especially since the Android app has some hickups) but I like it here 😊 8y

Though it loses its way a little at the end, it's a fun little slice of Gothic Victoriana.
