A fire consumes the Heller Home For Children in Morganville, North Carolina. Amidst rumors of devil worship, authorities remand the teenage arsonist to a sanitarium. Unaware of the turmoil in their new hometown, the Littles -- David, Kate, and seven year-old Becca -- are moving from New York City to Morganville in hopes of repairing their own lives, which were recently shattered by a violent act.

In trying to replicate an older, pulpy style of book this novel just replicates what can suck about horror aka racism, homophobia, misogyny, the like.

khooliha Plus, the bonus short story (which is about 5 pages long) has the evil, murderous main character casually talk about being asexual for a handful of paragraphs. Truly, the representation that I, a real life ace, want to see! 7y
khooliha Don't let straight white men write horror, is what I'm saying. 7y

I'm not saying it's impossible for two boys of the same age who are friends to be named Nathaniel - I'm just saying maybe make a different choice.

...maybe... Maybe no one is supposed to be likable in this book?

This book seems racist? I'm not far in, so it has time to turn around, but so far signs point to Bad.

Meanwhile, I'm about to start my first #nocturnalreaders book and I'm already charmed by this bit of back cover business.
