Pink Slime: A Novel | Fernanda Trķas
6 posts | 5 read | 1 to read
In a city ravaged by a mysterious plague, a woman tries to understand why her world is falling apart. An algae bloom has poisoned the previously pristine air that blows in from the sea. Inland, a secretive corporation churns out the only food anyone can afford--a revolting pink paste, made of an unknown substance. In the short, desperate breaks between deadly windstorms, our narrator stubbornly tends to her few remaining relationships: with her difficult but vulnerable mother; with the ex-husband for whom she still harbors feelings; with the boy she nannies, whose parents sent him away even as terrible threats loomed. Yet as conditions outside deteriorate further, her commitment to remaining in place only grows--even if staying means being left behind.

To be fair to the author, I really am not in the mood for dystopians these days, but I read it for a book club. I had trouble concentrating on it, and I did not connect with the main character. I thought she was pretentious and a martyr. This book seemed really slow and without much plot. The best part was Mauro, the little boy. He had a syndrome, which made him unable to feel full after eating, and everyone kept discounting him because of it.

ChaoticMissAdventures The thought of reading dystopian right now just isn't something I am interested in at all. Much too realistic at this point. 3w

It took me a while to get through this weird little book, but I did like it. In the face of a weird fog/plague/catastrophe the main character does her best to care for her mother, her ex husband, and the little boy placed in her care. #ToBLonglist but not #ToBShortlist I‘m surprised by that.

Hooked_on_books I liked this one. I would have loved to have seen it make the shortlist. 9mo

I love dystopian fiction. I like them weird and pretty dark. Bonus points if they're translations from unknown authors. I definitely recommend this if those things sound good to you. I definitely finished this while at a bar drinking water because I no longer give any fucks apparently.

A situation causing sickness has devastated a community and caused mass evacuations. A woman is trying to keep living in her home with fewer and fewer resources to do so. I thought this was a brilliant way to look at human-caused climate change, overconsumption, and the resource degradation and immigration that goes along with it. I‘m so glad the NBA put it on their longlist for translated literature.

Another odd #nbalonglist (translated) choice. In costal Uruguay, fish suddenly started dying, birds left the sky, and people got sick. In this strange dystopian world, a woman is paid to care for a child with a syndrome that causes extreme eating while keeping tabs on her mom and hospitalized ex-husband. Honestly, I didn‘t get this at all until about halfway through. The pieces came together a bit but not a very enjoyable reading experience.

mdemanatee Oh no, I was planning on diving into this one next but I‘ll go in expecting an experience like Schweblin‘s Fever Dream where years later I am still like šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø 12mo
BarbaraBB This sounds so weird. A bit too much so perhaps 12mo
Megabooks @mdemanatee it did not really remind me of that book. I‘m curious what more people will think since it did make the long! 12mo

Megabooks @BarbaraBB and she didn‘t explain major plot points/background until halfway or more through. Just really strange not in a good way. šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø 12mo
Suet624 When I saw your tag of nbalonglist I was so surprised that the National Basketball Association had a book club. (edited) 12mo
Megabooks @Suet624 no, no, it‘s a list of books preferred by their tallest players! The book stack must be at least 6‘6ā€ to honor the league‘s average height. 12mo
Suet624 šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ Darn! I just finished Brittany Griner‘s book. She never mentioned it! 12mo
Megabooks @Suet624 patriarchy. The players didn‘t see fit to include a female athlete‘s story. Plus, I‘ve heard a few are colluding with Putin. 🤫 12mo

Who are the authors you get excited about when you see they‘ve blurbed a book? This is the third anticipated book I‘ve picked up so far this year to discover a blurb from Mariana Enriquez (and the Silvia Moreno-Garcia blurb definitely made me look too) and they haven‘t let me down yet.
