Salsa Nocturna Stories
Salsa Nocturna Stories | Daniel José Older
25 posts | 21 read | 22 to read
A 300 year-old story collector enlists the help of the computer hacker next door to save her dying sister. A half-resurrected cleanup man for Death s sprawling bureaucracy faces a phantom pachyderm, doll-collecting sorceresses and his own ghoulish bosses. Gordo, the old Cubano that watches over the graveyards and sleeping children of Brooklyn, stirs and lights another Malagueña. Down the midnight streets of New York, a whole invisible universe churns to life in Daniel José Older's debut collection of ghost noir.

I'm excited to say this is the first book I've read in a while that made me immediately want to go out and get the authors other books. I loved the characters voices and the plot moved at a real pace, in part because it is written as a collection of short stories woven together by the characters.

Spiderfelt I love that feeling. 7y

Today I bought two copies of this collection. One to let people borrow and one to keep. Re reading some of my favorite passages, laughing and remembering how much heart these stories have.... took the picture at a funny angle to cover a very, very creepy picture of a doll face on this edition.

#FeistyFeb I bought the story Skin Like Porcelain Death on audio and have listened to it a few times. DJO narrates it himself and it is wonderful. I also read it when I was reading the full collection. Super creepy story but it's also addictive. #MostReread

I enjoyed this even more than Half Resurection Blues. I think the linked short story format worked really well for me in this universe.

Zelda (aka #littenkitten the elder) is deeply unimpressed that I've finished the 4th book of my #24in48 TBR pile.

Between my journal, my snacks, and my drinks, there seems to be something of a color scheme going on here. I'm at 19hrs and trying to keep up my energy to make it through to the end of #24in48

I'm switching back to my ereader for a last little bit of reading in bed before I go to sleep. I actually managed more than 10 1/2 hrs of my #24in48 today, which was better than I'd expected. I may actually make all 24hrs after all. But first, it's time to sleep.

saguarosally I hope to make it. I'm at nine hours. Keep reading! 7y

A quick stop on the way home for BBQ and Bone St Rumba. If ever you find yourself in Madison, That BBQ Joint makes the best pulled pork in town.

I liked this book. It's surprising how much warmth the author managed to pack into this collection of stories about a half-dead ghost-hunter. I really want to read Shadowshaper now.

thec0zy Shadowshaper is so good! I felt similarly impressed at the depth of topics it managed to touch. I hope you can get to it 😊 7y

I love DJO's writing style and the world he has created in the Bone Street Rumba series. There were characters and references from the previous books as well as new ones I hope to see pop up in the future!

Absolutely loving my current audiobook! The author reads his own work and he has the sexiest voice! I could listen to him read anything but am truly enjoying these ghost stories with a Latin twist.

Funny and ghoulish and beautiful and loving This is a celebration of New York, as much as a collection of ghostly adventures and interconnected characters. The stories with Gordo were my favorites, especially the title story, which deserves five stars of its own.

"The sky grows dark over the city as Janey tells me her story. The beast was supposed to help their community. Something that would look good in a brochure, I suppose. But instead, it cut loose, took out into the Williamsburg night. Janey and the kids went after it, and when they finally caught up what does it do? The thing ate a hipster."

PSA: This is 99 cents today and includes two new stories that weren't in the original. Be good to yourself and jump into some Brooklyn magic.

SuperPunkNinja I just did a happy dance and then bought it! 7y

I'm pissed at Amazon (and iBooks may be no better, but I had credit there so...) but Daniel Jose Older, being rad, has made his collection of stories $.99. Super grateful. I need to escape a bit to recharge my batteries for a long sustained fight for justice. #holdtheline #wearthepin

Littens. I even got to have dinner with him. Such a fantastic man.

My brain has exploded. It's kind of gross.

But seriously, I am so grateful to have had incredible moments this week despite the sorrow and anger, and the gratitude extends to all of you, to be able to share and mourn and celebrate together in a safe online environment is no small feat.

read_diverse_books How lucky! Sounds like you had a wonderful time. 💞📚💞 7y

I think writing a blog for so long helped a huge amount when I did #NaNoWriMo last year. It didn't mean the story was good but the words flowed out because I was used to sitting down and writing. I'm doing it again this year. Anyone else?

Literally the only collection of #shortstories I've ever loved. If you haven't read Daniel Jose Older before (and you really should) then this is a great starting point and it's the perfect time of year.

#booktober for short stories, why not take a look at Daniel José Older's newly re-released Salsa Nocturna story collection? It falls right after the second book in the series and continues the paranormal adventures of Carlos as he straddles the line between living and dead in modern day Brooklyn--kinda like book 2.5 of the series. I love this series!! will link book one and two below. @RealLifeReading

RealLifeReading I really keep meaning to reader Older's work!! Thanks for the reminder 8y

Speaking of ebook #shortstories I adore, Daniel José Older's Salsa Nocturna is today's #bookriot Deal of the Day! If you've loved his Bone Street Rumba series and Shadowshaper--or want to jump into his malevolent and ridiculously fun Brooklyn--do not hesitate to snag this baby! Blurbed by NK Jemisin, to boot...you know it's right.

#somethingforsept ebook edition! #shortstories I cannot live without.

read_diverse_books I own Quantum Santeria but haven't had a chance to read it yet. I almost did for #DiverseAThon but got sidetracked. 😟 8y
LindsayReads @read_diverse_books It is sooooo much fun. Many of the stories are interconnected. I've been wanting to re-read it ever since devouring it in March. 8y

These are ghost stories. Ghosts of our past, our histories, our failures, our wants and desires, what could have been, what should have been, and, unfortunately, what will never be.
