A few days ago somewhere on social media I noticed that the '36 Italian short Il Caso Valdemar, based on the tagged Poe story, was described as “the first gory movie.“ Intrigued by this I decided to reread the story & watch the short. When the story was published in 1845 it was believed for a time to be real, due to not being labeled a work of fiction & being presented as a case study. The Wikipedia entry for the story is fascinating. But I👇

vivastory recommend that you read the story first. Or if you pref. check out the Basil Rathbone reading, linked below. As is the Italian short.

Last night of #cyoreadathon and I pulled together a solid 5 hours of reading (not so bad for me right now) and I‘m very happy with it. Since yesterday along with some more of conjuring of light I finished The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar and started A Discovery of Witches to mix things up. Had a great time this weekend and I‘ll keep adding books to #screamathon and #scarathon for #teamharkness.

Poe has a power of terror in this story unmatched, in my opinion, by King and Lovecraft. He uses literary power.
