Kate and Harriet are best friends, growing up together on an isolated Australian cape in the 1880s. As daughters of the lighthouse keepers, the two girls share everything, until a fisherman, McPhail, arrives in their small community. When Kate witnesses the desire that flares between him and Harriet, she is torn by her feelings of envy and longing. But one moment in McPhails hut will change the course of their lives forever. Inspired by a true story, Skylarking is a stunning debut novel about friendship, love and loss, one that questions what it is to remember and how tempting it can be to forget. Kate Mildenhalls impressive debut novel takes an historical case and re-imagines it with such sensitivity and insight that we feel this must be how it truly happened. Emily Bitto A brave, beautiful and richly textured book that delicately explores the fault lines in love and friendship. Lucy Treloar Mildenhall is at her best when she is exploring the complex relationship between these two young women as their burgeoning sexuality begins to cause problems within their tiny community. Books+Publishing Skylarking is a strikingly real and deeply moving meditation on adolescent friendship in all its complexitiesa heart-wrenching work. Olga Lorenzo

Apologies in advance but I'm trying to catch up on all my read books. There may be a few posts today. This one was beautifully described. I could really see the windswept, isolated landscape. I enjoyed the story but lost patience a small number of times with the main character. A good read.

This is a beautiful debut novel about friendship and love, that very first obsessive ‘best friend‘ love - Kate and Harriet are growing up on an isolated Australian cape in 1880s. They‘re right on the cusp of adulthood when McPhail arrives in their small community. We see through Kate‘s eyes the growing attraction between Harriet & McPhail. I think the author captured that atmosphere of friendship so well.

I enjoyed this book for the most part & was ready to give it a thumbs up, until I got to the end. Skylarking is well written and though you may or may not like the main characters, they are relatable, in spite of the time period. I loved this book & truly wish the ending was different as there was a nice flow to the book, but then the author seemed to rush through the conclusion. I'd be interested to know what others thought of it.

Pretty average read unfortunately. The writing was good but i didn't feel any connection to characters at all.

MrBook Beautiful pic! 😊👍🏻 8y
