Picnic at Hanging Rock | Joan Lindsay

Pickpick

Picnic at Hanging Rock tells of a group of boarding school girls who go on an excursion to Hanging Rock. Most girls are quite content to relax, grateful be away from the school, though a small group goes off to explore & subsequently vanishes. The book goes on to describe how everyone's affected. The eerie tone lends to the story & it is very well written. Though the characters are somewhat unlikeable, I still wanted to know what happened to them.

Thornwood House | Anna Romer

Pickpick

To be honest, I only started this book as part of a reading challenge (read a book set in your state - ✔️) but I am glad I read it.
Thornwood House is the story of a woman who inherits an abandoned home in regional Queensland from her ex-husband. Unhappy with life, she sees it as the fresh start she & her daughter need, so they make the move & end up in the middle of a murder mystery.
This book was a real page turner & I highly recommend it!

Marchpane I recently read this thriller set on Queensland which was really good: 7y

So, I wanted to mention this book, but didn't feel comfortable reviewing it due to the subject matter (hence the lack of rating.) The Slave Across the Street tells of a young, teenage girl from Detroit & how she ends up in sexual servitude. It's an eye-opening account that was incredibly hard to read, but I do urge anyone who picks up this book to persevere. Hopefully, one day, humans get it together & stamp out this horrific behaviour.

Zoo 2 | James Patterson

Pickpick

I found Zoo & Zoo 2 to be action-packed, thought provoking books. James Patterson's works may be formulaic, but it's definitely a formula that works! This was a great little page turner & was left open for a third book. Time will tell if we see that happen!

Skylarking | Kate Mildenhall

Mehso-so

I enjoyed this book for the most part & was ready to give it a thumbs up, until I got to the end. Skylarking is well written and though you may or may not like the main characters, they are relatable, in spite of the time period. I loved this book & truly wish the ending was different as there was a nice flow to the book, but then the author seemed to rush through the conclusion. I'd be interested to know what others thought of it.

The Song of Achilles | Madeline Miller

Pickpick

I loved this book! It's a story many know, but Madeline Miller offered a beautiful & unique take on it. I won't say much, as I have a tendency to spoil the story, but I was completely emotionally invested in this tale.

I really enjoyed this book; the prose was good, it was well paced & I had that feeling that the truth was just tantalisingly out of reach for a good portion of the book. I would definitely recommend this one 😊
