Rez Ball | Byron Graves
4 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
This compelling debut novel by new talent Byron Graves tells the relatable, high-stakes story of a young athlete determined to play like the hero his Ojibwe community needs him to be. These days, Tre Brun is happiest when he is playing basketball on the Red Lake Reservation high school teameven though he cant help but be constantly gut-punched with memories of his big brother, Jaxon, who died in an accident. When Jaxon's former teammates on the varsity team offer to take Tre under their wing, he sees this as his shot to represent his Ojibwe rez all the way to their first state championship. This is the first step toward his dream of playing in the NBA, no matter how much the odds are stacked against him. But stepping into his brothers shoes as a star player means that Tre cant mess up. Not on the court, not at school, and not with his new friend, gamer Khiana, who he is definitely not falling in love with. After decades of rez teams almost making it, Tre needs to take his team to state. Because if he can live up to Jaxon's dreams, their story isnt over yet. This book is published by Heartdrum, an imprint that publishes high-quality, contemporary stories about Indigenous young people in the United States and Canada.

Byron Graves‘ debut novel is a winner! HS sophomore Tre loves basketball and plays his heart out in honor of his brother Jaxon who died last year. It‘s hard for his mom and dad to “see” Tre when they are still grieving their older son. Tre is a strong protagonist - he is partly based on the Ojibwa author‘s life in Minnesota.

Tre is a sophomore, and his family is dealing with the recent death of his older brother. This story is about his family dealing with that grief, but it‘s also about friendship, crushes, the pressure of high school sports, and figuring out how those things work together. It‘s also about a Native American team proving themselves, and includes some action packed basketball games. 🏀

Due to language and alcohol use, I would consider this mature YA.

Daisey I received an audiobook edition of this book through the Libro.fm Educator ALC program.

I dread sports books. I read them so I have new books to recommend to young patrons but I dread them. This book is all basketball, all the time. It is also all heart. Great friendships, a family who is actively surviving the eldest son‘s death, and a community that just needs one win. This was fantastic. I gave a basketball novel five stars!!!😳

Daisey That‘s high praise! Maybe I need to move this one up the TBR. 3mo
