The Joy of Small Things
The Joy of Small Things: 'A not-so-small joy in itself.' Nigella Lawson | Hannah Jane Parkinson
2 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
'This book is a not-so-small joy in itself.' NIGELLA LAWSON 'Parkinson has the gift of making you look with new eyes at everyday things. The perfect daily diversion.' JOJO MOYES 'Always funny and frank and full of insight, I absolutely love Parkinson's writing.' DAVID NICHOLLS 'I loved this book . . . Parkinson's writing transports you to unexpected places of joy and comfort . . . these pages contain happiness.' MARINA HYDE 'The twenty-first century feels a lot more bearable in Parkinson's company.' CHARLOTTE MENDELSON Drawn from the successful Guardian column, these everyday exultations and inspirations will get you through dismal days. Hannah Jane Parkinson is a specialist in savouring the small pleasures of life. She revels in her fluffy dressing gown ('like bathing in marshmallow'), finds calm in solo cinema trips, is charmed by the personalities of fonts ('you'll never see Comic Sans on a funeral notice'), celebrates pockets and gleefully abandons a book she isn't enjoying. Parkinson's everyday exaltations - selected from her immensely successful Guardian column - will utterly delight. FEATURES BRAND NEW MATERIAL 'A compendium of delights.' OBSERVER 'Delightful . . . a love letter to those little moments of bliss that get us through the daily grind.' RED

If ever there was a niche post! I don‘t think I have ever felt so seen in actual published words. I have spent the last 10 plus years feeling like I have to justify where I came from, ‘cos someone thinks I didn‘t sound like it. Lot of ‘I am actually, yes I know it doesn‘t sound like it‘ etc etc (until I have a drink, am tired, or spend a weekend with the family!) all jokes aside though ⬇️

Itchyfeetreader I suspect this is my tiny first wold insight into what confounding small minded expectations feels like. (edited) 5mo
Velvetfur Omg I feel seen now too! I lived in London for 12 years, lived in various places before that, so don't have that much of an accent, but like you out comes out when I'm angry, haha! 5mo
Velvetfur Sorry I don't mean like when you're angry, I know that's not what you said in your post! I mean it comes out in certain situations, sorry I worded it wrong! 5mo
Itchyfeetreader @Velvetfur no need to apologise! Sounds like we had the same experience ‘but are you though?‘. I‘ll never forget esp the first time. It was a friend of a friend. telling me ‘it was okay I didn‘t sound like I was from Liverpool‘ 5mo
Velvetfur @Itchyfeetreader oof! The cheek! On the flip side though, while I lived in London I had several times where I'd say I'm from Liverpool and the person I was talking to would say that they'd been there and absolutely loved it! Which always made me proud, hehe 😁 5mo

I started this today and it is the perfect, meditative escape. I just have to make sure I don‘t pick my phone back up when I set the book down. Thank you @Mitch for what is turning out to be the perfect book for my mental health. 💖
