An instant New York Times bestseller! For readers who have just finished Naomi Noviks The Golden Enclaves and are ravenous for more dark academia (Booklist), this pulse-pounding (Publishers Weekly, starred review) fantasy thriller follows six teenage wizards as they fight to make it home alive after a malfunctioning spell leaves them stranded in the wilderness. Ren Monroe has spent four years proving shes one of the best wizards in her generation. But top marks at Balmerick University will mean nothing if she fails to get recruited into one of the major houses. Enter Theo Brood. If being rich were a sin, hed already be halfway to hell. After a failed and disastrous party trick, fate has the two of them crossing paths at the public waxway portal the day before holidays; Theos punishment is to travel home with the scholarship kidswhich doesnt sit well with any of them. A fight breaks out. In the chaos, the portal spell malfunctions. All six students are snatched from the safety of the schools campus and set down in the middle of nowhere. And one of them is dead on arrival. If anyone can get them through the punishing wilderness with limited magical reserves its Ren. Shes been in survival mode her entire life. But no magic could prepare her for the tangled secrets the rest of the group is harboring, or for whats following them through the dark woods

I stayed up way too late finishing this book. It was really good. Fast paced with a few interesting twists at the end. I will definitely read the sequel when it comes out in a couple months.

A fantastical story of vengeance and magic with a dearth if likable characters. There is a deadly quest and by the end, I just didn‘t care.

I wasn't expecting much from this one, but I actually really enjoyed it. Survival magic with a bit of a twist.

This Fantasy novel focused on humans at a school in the sky who can use magic as long as they have enough “credits” stored in a talisman of sorts. There is classism and power struggles between those who live in the sky and those who live on the ground. There were interesting creatures and I loved how the author played with the idea of villains and heroes and the idea of revenge. Great ending as we wait for the next installment! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I mean, yeah I bought it for my son but who could resist reading about a group of kids at a school for wizards who find themselves lost in the mountains stalked by an creature like nothing they ever encountered. Danger & secrets abound. Fascinating magic system in which magic can be refilled & stored, where casting a spell costs a specific number of Ockley‘s. The story delves into class, privilege & more in some interesting ways. Solid YA fantasy.

Went to pick up the tagged book, the latest by one of my son‘s favorite authors, and decided it only made sense to pursue the sale shelves while at the bookstore and oops, I found one for me at a great price. Yay! And also, I have no idea how I haven‘t read The Haunting of Hill House before, but i can now remedy that oversight.
