Hour of the Wolf
Hour of the Wolf: An Inspector Van Veeteren Mystery | Hakan Nesser
8 posts | 7 read | 1 to read
A boy in a dark duffel coat. Lying in the ditch. Contorted at impossible angles, with his back pressed up against a concrete culvert and his face staring straight at him. As if he were trying to make some kind of contact. As if he wanted to tell him something. In the middle of a damp, dark night, a young man is struck by a car after leaving his girlfriends house. The driver, drunk, leaves the body by the side of the road. Wrestling with guilt, the driver tries to put the murder out of his minduntil a blackmail note arrives, setting into motion a chain of events that will draw everyone involved into a fog of crime. Reinhart, the new chief inspector of the Maardam police force, sets his team to work. But when the victim of a second, possibly related, killing is identified, Reinhart realizes that this is no ordinary investigation. In Hour of the Wolf, former chief inspector Van Veeterena legend now in retirementis called upon to face his greatest trial yet, when someone close to him is found dead. Van Veeterens former colleagues, desperate for answers, struggle to decipher the clues to these appalling crimes. As the killer becomes increasingly unhinged and unpredictable, Van Veeteren is forced to reenter a world he left behind, and to avenge a death. Told with Hkan Nessers trademark eye for detail, breakneck plotting, and gut-wrenching moral tension, Hour of the Wolf finds the Nordic noir superstar spinning one of his darkest tales yet. From the Hardcover edition.

I seem to be saving reviews to do in one batch so this is 1st of 3 and 7th of the inspector van veeteren series. More grumpy scandi police drama and it's definitely a genre in which i feel totally at home, not sure what that says 😂 Anyway a road accident triggers a string of crimes which need investigating. Our hero still semi retired gets drawn in to the hunt for the criminal. Very satisfying.

This is an enjoyable mystery/thriller from Sweden. It opens with a man driving home drunk and accidentally killing a teenage pedestrian. But someone saw him. It unravels from there with the dual narratives of the unnamed man and the police investigation. I liked the twists and even gasped aloud at least once. I'll definitely try this author again.

Finished this one up tonight. Probably my favorite of the Chief Inspector Van Veeteren crime novels. This one is seventh in the series. For me, Van Veeteren ranks right up there with Henning Mankell's Kurt Wallander.

Time for a little late afternoon reading with Louie. Returning to my Swedish crime novels. This time number 7 of the Inspector Van Veeteren mysteries. I enjoyed the previous 6 and I bet I'll like this one too.

Another book finished. Good mystery. Sometimes the writing felt a bit stilted but that could be part of the translation. #24in48
