Hope: A Novel | Andrew Ridker
3 posts | 2 read | 10 to read
Painfully funny. . . . This rivals Taffy Brodesser-Akners Fleishman is in Trouble in its pitch-perfect portrayal of Jewish American life. Publishers Weekly (starred review) A hilarious and heartfelt novel about a seemingly perfect family in an era of waning American optimism, from the acclaimed author of The Altruists The year is 2013 and the Greenspans are the envy of Brookline, Massachusetts, an idyllic (and idealistic) suburb west of Boston. Scott Greenspan is a successful physician with his own cardiology practice. His wife, Deb, is a pillar of the community who spends her free time helping resettle refugees. Their daughter, Maya, works at a distinguished New York publishing house and their son, Gideon, is preparing to follow in his fathers footsteps. They are an exceptional family from an exceptional place, living in exceptional times. But when Scott is caught falsifying blood samples at work, he sets in motion a series of scandals that threatens to shatter his family. Deb leaves him for a female power broker; Maya rekindles a hazardous affair from her youth; and Gideon drops out of college to go on a dangerous journey that will put his principles to the test. From Brookline to Berlin to the battlefields of Syria, Hope follows the Greenspans over the course of one tumultuous year as they question, and compromise, the values that have shaped their lives. But in the midst of their disillusionment, theyll discover their own capacity for resilience, connection, and, ultimately, hope.

While I LOVE the cover of this novel the book was a HUGE NOPE for me! I HATED the pretentious and self loathing Greenspan Family along with the smug author Andrew Ridker. Admittedly I‘m sensitive to portrayals of the Jewish experience both in & out of the USA so this one just ticked off too many problematic stereotypes that really irk me. I even disliked listening to the whiny sounding narrator and at over 10 hours it was torture.

Cinfhen Another out of sync experience for us @Megabooks 🤪😘 (edited) 9mo
squirrelbrain Oh dear…😬 9mo
Megabooks Wow! We continue to be soooo out of sync. I‘m sorry you found it problematic too. 👎💔 9mo

Cinfhen I was SO DISAPPOINTED @TrishB @AmyG because it sounded like a book I‘d love but I pretty much hated it right from the start 😩 9mo

Cinfhen I‘m overly sensitive @TheBookHippie but I found this book to have too many negative stereotypes! Sometimes I can laugh along but this time it felt too cringey!! I still LOVE the cover 💜 9mo

Pickpick

Franzen with a splash of Fleishman Is in Trouble. I loved this! Perfect audiobook company on my trip to Nashville. I love photo covers, but it‘s not about a Bar Mitzvah. 🤔😂

The Greenspans appear to be the perfect couple, but when Deb gets a life-changing call during a dinner party, it will send her marriage and adult children into crisis. Secrets are revealed. Finances are strained. And plenty of bad (and a few good) decisions are made.

Deblovestoread Stacked although this pic makes me cringe a bit. I was the tall 8th grader with the short boy resting his head on my chest at a dance. It didn't end well 🤣 10mo
MicheleinPhilly I loved The Altruists! Stacked! 10mo
Soubhiville This cover is 🤌😆. This part of growing up was so awkward and this photo really captures that. 10mo

Megabooks @Soubhiville @Deblovestoread yes! I hit my growth spurt early and was tall until 12-13 then everyone passed me because I quit growing. I treasure that class picture in the 5th grade where I was in the back row. 😂😂 but yeah, middle school dances are awkward city! 10mo
Megabooks @MicheleinPhilly fantastic! 10mo
LeahBergen I love the cover! 😆 9mo
Chelsea.Poole This cover stopped me mid-scroll 👀 v intrigued 😆 9mo
Cinfhen Im kvelling @TheBookHippie I think this one is probably made for us 😘 I LOVE LOVE LOVE the cover!!!! And no joke, I‘m pretty sure I owned that black & white polka dot sweater 😂 (edited) 9mo
TheBookHippie @Cinfhen I owned the flowered dress 👀 9mo
Cinfhen @TheBookHippie 😂😂😂😂😂I think I did too!!! It was the perfect Bat Mitzvah party dress 🩷 9mo
Megabooks @Cinfhen @TheBookHippie yes! Oversized large print sweaters and floral print dresses. I‘m having nostalgia for those flats though! It was “do I wear a heel because I‘m a mature teen 😉 or a flat because I‘m so effing tall?!” 😂😂 (edited) 9mo
Megabooks @Cinfhen I hope you enjoy this!! I think you will! 9mo
Megabooks @LeahBergen @Chelsea.Poole it‘s a fantastic, arresting cover! 9mo
