Rest in Pieces
Rest in Pieces: The Curious Fates of Famous Corpses | Bess Lovejoy
10 posts | 3 read | 22 to read
A marvelously macabre (Kirkus Reviews) history of the bizarre afterlives of corpses of the celebrated and notorious dead. For some of the most influential figures in history, death marked the start of a new adventure. The famous deceased have been stolen, burned, sold, pickled, frozen, stuffed, impersonated, and even filed away in a lawyers office. Their fingers, teeth, toes, arms, legs, skulls, hearts, lungs, and nether regions have embarked on voyages that crisscross the globe and stretch the imagination. Counterfeiters tried to steal Lincolns corpse. Einsteins brain went on a cross-country road trip. And after Lord Horatio Nelson perished at Trafalgar, his sailors submerged him in brandywhich they drank. From Alexander the Great to Elvis Presley, and from Beethoven to Dorothy Parker, Rest in Pieces connects the lives of the famous dead to the hilarious and horrifying adventures of their corpses, and traces the evolution of cultural attitudes toward death.

It‘s a windy, rainy, miserable Halloween, but my neighborhood decided not to postpone Trick-or-treating, so Olive and I are here ready to pass out candy. I‘m not expecting a crowd, so I brought my book. 💀 🎃 👻 Happy Halloween, all!

Buechersuechtling Love your picture. Olive looks a bit like there are VIPs to come. Love that‼️ 4y

I don't really use the library for physical books anymore but it is my default for ebooks and audio. Just started The Witching Hour and I'm still working through Rest in Pieces...hopefully I'll finish both before they expire! Also, super jealous of everyone's attractive library cards but this is the card I've had since middle school, so I'm attached. Our library has gone through several new designs. #bookandlibrarycard #riotgrams

slategreyskies How are you liking The Witching Hour? I just purchased it online, and I'm excited about it! It needs to get here already! 😂 7y
everlocalwest @slategreyskies I'm really enjoying it! I love returning to Rice's moody, atmospheric writing this time of year. Especially her super romantic depictions of New Orleans. 7y

My #currentread is this collection of essays about the adventures of famous corpses and it is just my kind of October read...you have death and the macabre without igniting all of my anxieties. Really enjoying this one, not a book to read straight through but I read a few pieces everyday. #riotgrams

If a man die, shall he live again?

...apparently.

In a section about famous corpses whose skulls were stolen, I come upon this spectacular transition:
