The Three of Us

Long-standing tensions between a husband, his wife, and her best friend finally come to a breaking point in this sharp domestic comedy of manners, told brilliantly over the course of one day. What if your two favorite people hated each other with a passion? The wife has it all. A big house in a nice neighborhood, a ride-or-die snarky best friend, Temi, with whom to laugh about facile men, and a devoted husband who loves her above all elseeven his distaste for Temi. On a seemingly normal day, Temi comes over to spend a lazy afternoon with the wife: drinking wine, eating snacks, and laughing caustically about the husband's shortcomings. But when the husband comes home and a series of confessions are made, the wife's two confidantes are suddenly forced to jockey for their positions, throwing everyone's integrity into questionand their long-drawn-out territorial dance, carefully constructed over years, into utter chaos. Told in three taut, mesmerizing partsthe wife, the husband, the best friendover the course of one day, The Three of Us is a subversively comical, wildly astute, and painfully compulsive triptych of domestic life that explores cultural truths, what it means to defy them, and the fine line between compromise and betrayal when it comes to ourselves and the people we're meant to love.

I enjoy being a fly on the wall in people‘s stories. This filled an itch I didn‘t know was there. Short read to boost progress on my reading goal because that makes me happy!

Such dismal reviews across the internet for this one, but I was wrapped up in this “thruple” from page 1! Best friends (more like possessive sisters) have been together for years and have their lives planned out: to live for themselves and not under the thumb of parents, potential husbands or children. However, one gets married and things change. Petty jealousies are constant between the wife‘s bff & husband. Readers get the perspective of all 3.

batsy Yeah, this sounds so good! Just the kind of mess I like in my fiction 😆 5mo
Chelsea.Poole @batsy oh same here! And this one is super short, so it‘s a quick mess, which I also appreciate 😆 5mo
BarbaraBB Great review. Sounds very tempting 5mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I‘m surprised by some lower ratings for this book - I really enjoyed it! It was a short but sharp read with messy character dynamics and interesting takes on the intersection of marriage, friendship, and identity. The audiobook performance was excellent and heightened the experience; it feels like this story would shine on the stage. 🎧

Christine I really liked it too! 6mo

I‘m reading this one now and so far it‘s good. We see the perspectives of three different people: the wife, her best friend, and her husband. The story is written a bit different than the way a standard novel is written. Doesn‘t go by chapter, just has parts. It can be a little confusing about who‘s saying what, but it‘s an interesting story. I‘m learning the history of the wife‘s relationship with her bf and husband. 😊📚❤️

A wife, a husband, and the wife‘s best friend destructively navigate their ever changing dynamic over the course of 24 hours.

Jealousy ✨ Perspective✨ Short

I‘m not sure if I missed the message of this book or what but it just wasn‘t for me. This book was told in three parts: the wife, the husband, and the best friend. I felt like it was just petty stories about why the husband and best friend hated each other. I definitely don‘t think it was a bad book but it just wasn‘t for me but I‘m sure others will really like it!

This could be viewed as just the musings and snark of three socioecomically privileged young people who are insecure, jealous, and hypercritical of each other. But there‘s also some insightful stuff around gender, culture, identity, and more. A quick and thought-provoking listen that features three excellent audio performances!

I really wanted to like this more, but I feel that it was too long for what it ultimately delivered. At the end, it felt like a very long bickering session.
