My Effin' Life
My Effin' Life | Geddy Lee
9 posts | 5 read | 1 to read
The long-awaited memoir, generously illustrated with never-before-seen photos, from the iconic Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Rush bassist, and bestselling author of Geddy Lee's Big Beautiful Book of Bass.Geddy Lee is one of rock and roll's most respected bassists. For nearly five decades, his playing and work as co-writer, vocalist and keyboardist has been an essential part of the success story of Canadian progressive rock trio Rush. Here for the first time is his account of life inside and outside the band.Long before Rush accumulated more consecutive gold and platinum records than any rock band after the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, before the seven Grammy nominations or the countless electrifying live performances across the globe, Geddy Lee was Gershon Eliezer Weinrib, after his grandfather murdered in the Holocaust. As he recounts the transformation, Lee looks back on his family, in particular his loving parents and their horrific experiences as teenagers during World War II.He talks candidly about his childhood and the pursuit of music that led him to drop out of high school. He tracks the history of Rush which, after early struggles, exploded into one of the most beloved bands of all time.He shares intimate stories of his lifelong friendships with bandmates Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart--deeply mourning Peart's recent passing--and reveals his obsessions in music and beyond. This rich brew of honesty, humor, and loss makes for a uniquely poignant memoir.

As a 🇨🇦 I grew up knowing who Rush/GL are/were but I‘m not a heavy metal/progressive rock fan so I didn‘t know a lot about them. GL is a well read, well spoken, hard working, intense guy and this was really interesting to listen to - I feel like I need to listen to more than Tom Sawyer to understand GL more

Suet624 Don‘t know if you know how much I love the Foo Fighters and in particular Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins. I so appreciated the introduction they did for Rush‘s entry to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. https://youtu.be/-IdkYuxzcD0?si=On8DhkYFvRt7JI3p 3w
mcctrish @Suet624 he mentions this in the book. They were left out for so long, GL and the rest of Rush were kind of like who cares? when it was announced they were being inducted but the fans were so happy and Rush was so thrilled by the introduction 3w
Suet624 That‘s great. ❤️ 3w

The struggle is real while I continue to clean, purge, reorganize and listen. Best quote just came up, GL was talking about masking/vaccines and all the division they came with “I prefer to live in a world that gives a shit “ and that‘s it in a nutshell. I want everyone to have a basic quality of life = education, healthcare, childcare, senior care, support services. It does look better now - but the Easter table scape is still a work in progress

Prairiegirl_reading I‘m not a huge Rush fan but I loved this book so much!! (edited) 1mo
kspenmoll I so wish we all could have that quality of life. 🩷 1mo
AmyG In a world that “gives a shit”…..when did so many people lose respect and concern for others? 😞 1mo

Geddy's memoir was all I expected and more. I wanted to learn more about his parents' experiences in the concentration camps, and was surprised at the amount of detail. It was very enjoyable to learn about his life in the studio and on the road with Alex and Neil. This book covers the highs of Rush's success and the lows of the passing of loved ones and personal struggles. A definite pick for Rush fans!

"You probably know me as Geddy Lee, but my birth name was Gershon Eliezer Weinrib, after my maternal grandfather, who was murdered in the Holocaust."

This one should be interesting.

1. My goal was to read 75 books and I‘m getting close to 100, Covid over the holiday has helped me pad my total a bit. lol.
2. Tagged book was my only 5 ⭐️ for December. (Expected as I typically read a lot of holiday fluff)
3. I‘m hoping to start my year off with something from my #auldlangspine list, perhaps The Five.

Holy shit! My musical hero. I‘ve enjoyed his audio book so much but we could not get to a live event - so this zoom with the purchase of the physical book from an independent bookstore was a major win! I saw Rush with Primus (the moderator Les Claypool) opening in 1994 from the front row. Hand to my heart, I forgot the words to their songs. 😂💗 I was in awe.

peaKnit #update to add this fantastic webinar went 90 minutes, I love Rush more with every page of their story. 5mo

Bookwomble They were the first band I saw live, 1980, the night before my high school biology exam, which was not a good idea, but fortunately I still passed 🎸🎓🤟😁 (edited) 5mo
Cortg @Bookwomble They were my husband AND my son‘s first concert too! My husband at 13, my son at 6. Hubby‘s english teacher (and family friend) took him and my son‘s 1st grade teacher was quite impressed he went and on a school night. I‘m glad you passed that exam! 5mo
Bookwomble Seems like they're a popular initiation to concert-going 😊 Biology was fine, but don't ask about my maths exam! 😄 5mo
