Please Report Your Bug Here: A Novel | Josh Riedel
3 posts | 2 read | 6 to read
An unexpected, inventive, heartfelt riff on the workplace novelstartup realism with a multiverse twist. Anna Wiener, author of Uncanny Valley Introducing Josh Riedel's adrenaline-packed debut novel about a dating app employee who discovers a glitch that transports him to other worlds Once you sign an NDA it's good for life. Meaning legally, I shouldn't tell you this story. But I have to. A college grad with the six-figure debt to prove it, Ethan Block views San Francisco as the place to be. Yet his job at hot new dating app DateDate is a far cry from what he envisioned. Instead of making the world a better place, he reviews flagged photo queues, overworked and stressed out. But that's about to change. Reeling from a breakup, Ethan decides to view his algorithmically matched soulmate on DateDate. He overrides the system and clicks on the profile. Then, he disappears. One minute, hes in a windowless office, and the next, hes in a field of endless grass, gasping for air. When Ethan snaps back to DateDate HQ, hes convinced a coding issue caused the blip. Except for anyone to believe him, hell need evidence. As Ethan embarks on a wild goose chase, moving from dingy startup think tanks to Silicon Valleys dominant tech conglomerate, it becomes clear that theres more to DateDate than meets the eye. With the stakes rising, and a new world at risk, Ethan must choose whoand whathe believes in. Adventurous and hypertimely, Please Report Your Bug Here is an inventive millennial coming-of-age story, a dark exploration of the corruption now synonymous with Big Tech, and, above all, a testament to the power of human connection in our digital era.

Lots to like here - cool premise, and I LOVED the early 2010s SF/Silicon Valley setting (and esp. how the author constantly mentioned foods/restaurants that were trending in that era; I lived in Santa Cruz then and would food-pilgrimage up to SF just to take part in those trends! 😆). The pace slowed for me at some point, and I had a love/hate relationship with the audio narration. I do wonder what it would have been like in print. Still a pick!

Suet624 I love the cover. 1y

I am digging speculative fiction this year, and this was no exception. I liked that it was techy rather than dystopian, too.

Ethan is working at an SF dating app startup, and he notices lots of black photos in the bug reports, but they have an odd texture. When the startup is acquired by a major company that has been pushing code into the app to skirt regulations, the truth he finds is will take him to places he could never imagine.

TheBookgeekFrau Sounds interesting 1y
AshleyHoss820 I have also found that speculative fiction really makes me happy! I‘ll have to stack this! Have you read Story of Your Life and Others? (edited) 1y
vivastory I'll be interested to see what speculative books work for you as I'm a fan! 1y

vivastory @AshleyHoss820 That's one of my favorite story collections ever! 1y
AshleyHoss820 @vivastory Mine too!! I had never really realized how much I loved that particular genre until I read that and was like, “Oh, this makes my brain tingle!” 😂 (edited) 1y
vivastory @AshleyHoss820 Have you read China Miéville's stories? They are some of the more memorable in the speculative genre that I've read 1y
BarbaraBB I too am appreciating speculative fiction more and more. I need to check out the one you mention too @AshleyHoss820 @vivastory 1y
Megabooks @AshleyHoss820 @vivastory Ashley, I have not read the ones you suggested, but I have stacked it now. Thanks! I have read Scott‘s collection and enjoyed it as well. I‘m still trying to find what works for me in this genre, but the ones skewing hard dystopian are not my fave this winter. (Just too stressful!) I liked the framing of the story within a story in Bug. Ethan was an interesting character. I liked the moral dilemmas the author gave him. (edited) 1y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB didn‘t get your comment in time. See what I‘ve said ⬆️. I think you‘d find Three Moments interesting. 💜 1y
AshleyHoss820 @vivastory I haven‘t! But I‘ve added it to my list! @BarbaraBB @Megabooks I really enjoyed Ted Chiang‘s writing because I found it more contemplative than dystopian! The title story (Story of Your Life) was the basis for the movie Arrival. (I think that‘s the one, anyway. 😂) His stories really made me pause and think. ☺️ Too much dystopia makes me stressy depressy since it‘s too relatable anymore, so I get what you‘re saying! 1y
BarbaraBB Thanks for the suggestion! I tried Mieville once and couldn‘t relate to it but like you, time might be right for me to try again. I am a bit fed up at the moment with books about immigrants (Dominicana), Black men facing the police (Violin Conspiracy), white men in midlife crisis, poverty/alcoholism in Ireland or Scotland, rich people‘s problems etc I‘ve been reading too many books with similar topics🤦🏻‍♀️ (edited) 1y
vivastory @AshleyHoss820 Ted Chiang reminds me A LOT of Borges. I love the movie adaptation Arrival. 1y
vivastory @BarbaraBB @Megabooks @AshleyHoss820 I also really like Jeff Vandermeer, especially his Southern Reach trilogy. 1y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB yes, so much of the literary fiction I‘ve read recently feels recycled. I‘ve been thinking I need to jump my main genre again, but I‘m not sure to what. I‘ve wanted to mix in more magical realism, speculative, and SciFi but sometimes I‘m not sure where to start! 1y
Megabooks @vivastory I tried Southern Reach when it came out, but it didn‘t click. I may try again because my tastes change A LOT over time. 1y
vivastory I also really liked Borne 1y
Megabooks Totally off topic but were you planning to read The Passenger/Stella Maris, Scott? I think you‘d really like them and the philosophical topics he wrestles with. @vivastory 1y
vivastory I am! I received the first book as a Xmas gift & am planning on picking up book 2 next time I'm at B&N. I love Cormac McCarthy. Really looking forward to both of them! 1y
Megabooks @vivastory great! I can‘t wait to read what you think when you get to them!! 1y
Cinfhen So true @BarbaraBB it‘s harder & harder to come across original or unique stories that aren‘t outrageous or too complicated to enjoy. 1y
Cinfhen But for some reason this book doesn‘t appeal to me 🤷🏼‍♀️ 1y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen @Megabooks It might explain why I love those Japanese books so much. They are different! Just started 1y
Cinfhen Ahhhh, that‘s a good point @BarbaraBB Hope the book doesn‘t disappoint 🤞🏼🫶🏼 1y
Megabooks @Cinfhen yeah, I think we‘re just feeling different things right now. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I always love your reviews though. 🫶🏻 1y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I‘m digging Japanese books right now too. Basically anything in translation. (Non US or UK perspective.) Started this one you loved last night. I was waiting on the paperback because I 💜💜💜 the cover art!! 1y
Cinfhen It‘s ok that we feel differently about some books - it would be SO BORING if we always like the same thing xxx 1y
Megabooks @Cinfhen truth!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 1y
BarbaraBB That is such a weird book too! And I agree with books in translation for a different perspective. That is probably why we‘ve loved the challenges! 1y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB agree!! 💯💯 I picked up a Brazilian book in translation at Dollar Tree today. (Only $1.25!) 1y

This book popped up in my Amazon algorithm, and it sounded neat. I‘ve been enjoying techy sci-fi and thrillers the past couple of years, but I wasn‘t sure enough to buy it, so I requested it at the library, and they bought it! This isn‘t usually the kind of audiobook they buy, so I‘m quite appreciative. 🙌🏻🙌🏻 #LitsyLovesLibraries 💕

KathyWheeler This sounds really interesting. 1y
Megabooks @KathyWheeler I‘m excited about it! 1y
