In Country
In Country | Bobbie Ann Mason
8 posts | 9 read | 7 to read
In the summer of 1984, the war in Vietnam came home to Sam Hughes, whose father was killed there before she was born. The soldier-boy in the picture never changed. In a way that made him dependable. But he seemed so innocent. "Astronauts have been to the moon," she blurted out to the picture. "You missed Watergate. I was in the second grade." She stared at the picture, squinting her eyes, as if she expected it to come to life. But Dwayne had died with his secrets. Emmett was walking around with his. Anyone who survived Vietnam seemed to regard it as something personal and embarrassing. Granddad had said they were embarrassed that they were still alive. "I guess you're not embarrassed," she said to the picture. This P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more.

I loved this book. I got completely wrapped up in it and cried when it ended both because it was sad and because it was over. I'm curious, for anyone else who has read this, did you wonder if "Magnum, P.I." was something Sam watched? I don't think I've ever in my life thought about a TV show a fictional character would enjoy, but I think she would have for it's Vietnam references. Also, why is every cover of this book worse than the last?

Maybe because it‘s Memorial Day weekend, but today‘s prompt #HometownGlory made me think ‘war‘ which made me think of this book; more for the cover than the story 🤷‍♀️

Let's take a book and music detour to the 80s. A friend of mine put on some R.E.M. the other day and when Orange #Crush came on we were like, "What does this mean?" So I looked it up and it's actually about the use of Agent Orange in the Vietnam War. Forever linking things to books, it made me remember In Country. I think that since this book was written in the mid-80s it's fallen off the radar a bit - so I'm bringing it back #crush #augustgrrrl

TrishB Singing it now. That will be on in our you tube party later 😀 7y

But she knew very well that on TV, people always had the words to express their feelings, while in real life hardly anyone ever did. On TV, they had script writers.
