Jane's Country Year
Jane's Country Year: The Elie and Sarah Hirschfeld Collection | Malcolm Saville
3 posts | 1 read | 7 to read
'At last she reached the brow of the hill ? now the country opened out below her and she looked down into a wide and lovely valley ? Still patched with snow the little fields spread like a carpet below her and here and there a farmhouse with barns and golden ricks was clearly seen. Across the plain ran, straight as a ruler, a railway line and she saw a toy train puffing and crawling across the picture.'Malcolm Saville's classic 1946 novel is about eleven-year old Jane's discovery of nature and country life during a year spent convalescing on her uncle's farm, after having been dangerously ill in post-war London. This deeply-felt novel was written while Saville was extending his range as a writer, alongside his very successful Lone Pine adventure series, and nature anthologies for children. Inspired by the experiences of Saville's own god-daughter, this marvellous novel is full of the wonder of discovery, as well the happiness of regaining health, making friends, and learning to love the natural world. The novel is also a record of rural England eighty years ago, written by one of the great twentieth century English nature writers. The Introduction is written by Hazel Sheeky Bird of the University of Newcastle. The illustrations by Bernard Bowerman have been reproduced from the first edition.

My reading plans for #NaturaLitsyBingo2023!

Thought I‘d take this challenge as an opportunity to read from my shelves, one per month. Had a lot of fun deciding on these twelve. I‘m sure I‘ll also be listening to some audiobooks that fit the prompts. Those are TBD.

Look forward to reading all of these (and more?) in the year ahead and seeing what others go for! @AllDebooks Thanks for coming up with this fun idea and organizing!

JamieArc I love seeing these! I used to read books like this so much more, but since joining Litsy, I so easily get caught up in what everyone else is reading. Trying to get back to books like this. I enjoyed Grandma Gatewood (and love her connection to Hocking Hills, a place I love). 1y
LitStephanie Good luck. That is a worthy goal! 1y
AllDebooks Oooooh how exciting, some great choices (that I'm stacking!) 1y

squirrelbrain I‘ve only read Bird Cottage, which I loved. 1y
BookBr Love it! 1y
jlhammar @JamieArc Yes, same for me! I buy them and am so excited to read them and then I tend not to make them priority. This challenge is just what I needed! Between this and #NunLitQuarterly, my 2023 reading is looking pretty amazing so far! 1y
jlhammar @AllDebooks I feel like I learn of a new nature book or books every day that I want to read! I was just reading about this series with Krista Tippett (On Being) this morning. I guess she did an episode/interview with Suzanne Simard last year and she mentions Robin Wall Kimmerer along with a couple of other books/authors I've added to my list.
