The Night Eaters: She Eats the Night (the Night Eaters Book #1)
The Night Eaters: She Eats the Night (the Night Eaters Book #1) | Marjorie Liu
10 posts | 9 read | 11 to read
The first volume in a new graphic novel horror trilogy from Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda--the creative team behind the New York Times bestselling series Monstress Chinese American twins, Milly and Billy, are having a tough time. On top of the multiple failures in their personal and professional lives, they're struggling to keep their restaurant afloat. Luckily their parents, Ipo and Keon, are in town for their annual visit. Having immigrated from Hong Kong before the twins were born, Ipo and Keon have supported their children through thick and thin and are ready to lend a hand--but they're starting to wonder, has their support made Milly and Billy incapable of standing on their own? When Ipo forces them to help her clean up the house next door--a hellish and run-down ruin that was the scene of a grisly murder--the twins are in for a nasty surprise. A night of terror, gore, and supernatural mayhem reveals that there is much more to Ipo and her children than meets the eye. Eisner Award-winning and bestselling author Marjorie Liu and illustrator Sana Takeda have crafted a wild and wicked tale that will leave readers hungry for more. She Eats the Night is the perfect start to The Night Eaters trilogy, which is a combination of Monsters by Barry Windsor-Smith and Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan.

You will love this if you, as one character puts it, think The Exorcist is a comedy. Liu and Takeda combine horror and humor in this first volume of a tale about immigration, family, and, of course, monsters.

I could not get into the Montress series, but I blew through this book in one sitting. The slow reveal was well handled, and the pace never slowed. It was a little goofy while keeping up the suspense. I'm usually not a fan of anime/manga faces but it was done well enough here. While there was a reveal, there wasn't much explanation (first of a planned trilogy). Looking forward to vol 2.

A new comic horror trilogy from the creators of Monstress. A heads up: There‘s no cute characters here, but all the gore that‘s in Monstress.

A family of four where the children lives at home and the mum is scared that she‘s been too lenient with her children. One day she brings the kids to the house next door to clean, but the house seem haunted or is something else going on?

I‘m such a HUGE fan of Monstress so you can imagine how excited I was when I found out that same team was doing another series. Love the artwork and storyline and I can‘t wait to get my hands on the next book in the Autumn. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Having not one (love, love, love Monstress) but two Liu/Takeda collaborations in the world is just an embarrassment of riches. Though this work is very different from Monstress the writing is every bit as good and, needless to say, the artwork is exquisite. If you are a fan of horror, graphic novels, Liu and/or Takeda, or some combination of all of them, I highly recommend this graphic novel. Visually stunning & creepy as anything.

This was a great horror graphic novel for October. Twins running a restaurant during the pandemic discover their emotionally distant mother has been hiding some distinctly horrifying secrets about who--and what--their family truly is. It was strangely lovely to see people wearing masks in a graphic novel and I loved that the story is set during the pandemic without being about the pandemic at all. Can't wait to read the next column in 2023!

IndoorDame I‘m excited about this one! 2y
