Doll's House
Doll's House | Rumer Godden
8 posts | 9 read | 6 to read
From Rumer Godden, one of the foremost authors of the 20th century, and illustrated by two-time Caldecott Honor recipient Tasha Tudor, comes a heartwarming tale filled with imagination and creativity that is ideal for any girl who has ever loved a doll so much that it has become real to her. For Tottie Plantaganet, a little wooden doll, belonging to Emily and Charlotte Dane is wonderful. The only thing missing is a dollhouse that Tottie and her family could call their very own. But when the dollhouse finally does arrive, Tottie's problems really begin. That dreadful doll Marchpane comes to live with them, disrupting the harmony of the Plantaganet family with her lies and conceited way. Will Tottie ever be able to call the dollhouse home? An ALA Notable Book For little girls who love dolls, women who remember dollhouse days, and literary critics who can recognize a masterpiece.--The New York Times Rumer Godden is the author of numerous books for children and adults, including The Story of Holly and Ivy, illustrated by Barbara Cooney, and the bestseller The Black Narcissus. Tasha Tudor has written and illustrated many books for children, including 1 is One and Mother Goose, both Caldecott Honor books.

I love how Mary Engelbreit is continuing to draw scenes from her favorite childhood books. I love this one. More here:

#ChildrensClassicRead2020 MARCH

I rather enjoyed this. I think it would make a good book club read for my third grade club. Loads to talk about! Also I now feel the need to own little wooden dolls 🤣. Glad I read it. Starts slow but then it‘s fine. On to April‘s book TWIG.

GingerAntics I‘m having a hard time finding this one, too. My inability to get physical books right now is killing me here. 4y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics I have that too. I use the library almost daily 😭 I miss it soooo much . 4y

GingerAntics My library isn‘t close enough to get physical books from. The one that‘s closest has very few books. It‘s mostly a computer hub. It‘s sad, really. 4y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics our library‘s shut 2 weeks ago 4y
GingerAntics I think ours shut about the same time. It might have been 3 weeks ago now. It‘s hard to keep up with what day it is. 4y
rubyslippersreads I didn‘t get to this one, but have read it many times. The ending always kind of upsets me, though. 😦 4y
TheBookHippie @rubyslippersreads I agree. Although I‘m thinking this will make good discussion. I‘m glad I read it. We have a couple books like this and they go over well. 4y

Such a sweet book. The little doll family is happy until Marchpane, an obnoxious porcelain doll enters their midst. Wishing is the only way to communicate with their owners. It was fun and reminds me of Toy Story.

I couldn‘t really get into this one until about halfway through, and most of the characters were pretty annoying. However, once the trouble started, it was a pretty good story and actually pretty intense for a story about dolls. I kinda wish I had a tiny little wooden doll, tho. 😁 #childrensclassicread2020

This book wasn‘t at my library. Others of hers were, but not this one. So I ordered it via amazon. Bonus Tasha Tudor is the illustrator! A favorite of mine.
I‘m looking forward to this one.

I read this when I was little and had always remembered vague parts of the story; it was so lovely to read it again with Bella. We loved gentle and wise Tottie, fragile Mr Plantagenet, whimsical Birdie, and also loved to hate Marchpane! We‘ve also enjoyed Miss Happiness and Miss Flower and Little Plum by the same author, and Bella then plays with her doll‘s house for days afterwards. Perfect for age 6+ #raisingreaders

Centique I loved this too! Definitely one of my top 5 favourite kids books. You‘re making me want to read it again 😍 5y
JillR Read it again @Centique it‘s just as good! Although it is so short. I must have been quite young when I read it as I remember thinking it was very, very long! 5y
