#falltreasures Day 27 #SchoolTheme
My much loved, much travelled college copy of an Australian classic. For those overseas, 'Henry' was actually Ethel. Like many women, she used a pen name.

Pickpick

An engaging character-based boarding school novel first published in 1910. Laura Rambotham is 12 when she leaves her country home to attend school in Melbourne, where she struggles to fit in among the snobby rich girls.
Note: The author was a woman, despite her male pseudonym. As often happens with classic literature, expect occasional offensive attitudes towards non-whites. #ozfiction

At the present stage of her career she was an extraordinarily prickly child, and even to her two sponsors did not at times present a very amiable outside: like a hedgehog, she was ever ready to shoot out her spines.

“I say, who on earth trimmed your hat?” she asked almost at once.
“Mother,” Laura answered bravely, while the colour mounted to her cheeks again.
“Well, I guess she made up her mind you shouldn‘t get lost as long as you wore it,” went on her cousin with disconcerting candour. “It makes you look just like a great big red double dahlia.”

CarolynM Another @ozfiction classic I've never read😱 although I remember liking the film. Are you enjoying it? 3y
Lindy @CarolynM I‘m enjoying it so much that I have set aside my other books for the moment. I‘m at the midpoint now. 😊 3y
LeahBergen Ooo, I have this one! I should really get to it soon. 3y
Lindy @LeahBergen Yes, indeedy doody, as my Australian friends say. 3y

🧐
I hadn‘t previously imagined what it would be like to be a passenger in a poorly driven horse carriage in an urban environment.

Ruthiella I think readers also take for granted the skill required to drive horses! 3y
Lindy @Ruthiella Yes, no doubt. One of my sisters is excellent with horses—she has a matched team—but I avoided doing anything horse-related, except by necessity, when we were growing up on our farm. 3y
sarahbarnes As an adult I am pretty intimidated by horses I‘ll admit. Even though I wanted one when I was a kid. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3y
Lindy @sarahbarnes Ha! Funnily enough, I‘m more comfortable around horses now than when I was a kid. One of my nieces holds international champion titles in the sport of reining, so I‘ve been to a lot of horse shows. 3y

Took a side trip today and happened upon the childhood home of Henry Handel Richardson (her pen-name) Beautiful spot, the house wasn't open but the garden was lovely. Its a long time since I read The Getting of Wisdom and I didn't finish Richard Mahony. Feels like time for a reread. #bookstagram #booklovers #australianliterature #chiltern #womenwriters #readingpile #bookworm

1890s Mean Girls! This is the first book that came to mind for #booktober #setinaschool.

It's a classic coming-of-age story about Laura Tweedle Rambotham, rebellious, free-spirited country girl, adjusting to the confines of city boarding school in Melbourne.

Semi-autobiographical (the female author wrote under a masculine pseudonym) and just such a gem of a book.

LilMamaMastro You had me at 1890s Mean Girls! 😆 What fun! 7y
sj_connor Oh dang, that sounds great. 7y
