The #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Surrender Trilogy and the Breathless Trilogy knows what makes readers hot. Now she turns it up in Mastered, the explosive first book in a new series of a desire too dangerous to resist. What he wants, he takes with no remorse or guilt. She stood out in his club like a gem, unspoiled and untouched. A lamb among wolves, she clearly didn't belong. Drawn to her innocence he watched as she was surrounded by men who saw what he did--but no one but him could touch her. He summoned her to his private quarters. He sensed her fear. He also recognized the desire in her eyes. And he knew she wouldn't leave before he possessed her. She had no need to know his secrets. Not until he had her under his complete and utter control. What he wants, she isn't sure she can give him. The moment he told her want he wanted, she couldn't resist. Instinct told her to run, but her heart said stay and walk the fine line between pleasure and pain. Though she wasn't sure she could ever completely surrender, the primal part of her wanted to try, even knowing this man could break her in ways she never imagined. Because once he possessed her, he owned her and it would be too late to turn back. She can only pray that he doesn't destroy her in the end.

There are some moments when the reader gets a distinct 50 Shades dejà vu vibe but, we have a good ol' NY Gangster...at least, its hinted. It's often pages of coddling the female who was virginal and naïve to the point of eye rolling - played up by her rural Southern charm. Her besties are bitchy, but you get the feeling Banks was trying to be genuine. Good story if predictable.

⭐️ Not Maya Banks' best book.. I enjoyed the Breathless series but this one was just a waste of time. 👎🏻 goes nowhere for me.

You know the alpha male, Insta-love, HEA genre? Yeah, that's my guilty pleasure. When I want easy, mindless reading, I find a book boyfriend and lose myself in his trilogy. Sad to say, I couldn't get out of this world of alpha Drake and his minions fast enough. This book was terrible. Crappy dialogue, ridiculous plot devices, a female MC I wanted to put in therapy, and all the misogynistic tropes you could want. Just... No. 😖 #bookisholympics one

Hooked_on_books Ug! 😠 8y
LibrarianJen I'll probably skip this one then! Maya Banks is hit and miss with me anyways. 8y

Bookworm54 Have you tried anything by Nalini Singh? 8y
ImaginativeMom @LibrarianJen Me, too! @Bookworm54 I don't think so. Any recommended starting place? 8y
Bookworm54 I would probably start with the psy-changeling series, as it is the one most people tend to love. The first in the series is called slave to sensation. She also has the guild hunter series-first book Angel's blood, and the rock hard series. She writes some pretty awesome alpha males! 8y
BookishFeminist Ugh! Misogynistic tropes are the worst killjoy in a book. (Or any other type of demoralizing ___ism trope for that matter.) 😓😤 8y
LibrarianJen @ImaginativeMom @Bookworm54 I love the psy-changeling series! 8y
Bookworm54 @LibrarianJen exactly! Fits all the tropes described. Amazing author :) 8y
ImaginativeMom @Bookworm54 @LibrarianJen Thanks! I'll check those out! May be some good reads for #bookisholympics. 8y
ImaginativeMom @BookishFeminist One of the ones this book played hard to was the, "You're so much more beautiful and amazing because you don't know you are" crap. It seemed to be this woman's most redeeming quality. 8y
