Half-Blown Rose
Half-Blown Rose: A Novel | Leesa Cross-Smith
6 posts | 9 read | 6 to read
From the award-winning author of This Close to Okay comes the irresistible story of a woman remaking her life after her husband's betrayal leads to a year of travel, art, and passion in Paris. Vincent, having grown up the privileged daughter of artists, has a life that is lovely in many ways. At forty-four, she enjoys strolling the streets of Paris and teaching at the modern art museum; she has a vibrant group of friends; and she's even caught the eye of a young, charismatic man named Loup. But Vincent is also in Paris to escape a painful betrayal: her husband, Cillian, has published a bestselling book divulging secrets about his past and their marriage, including the fact that when he was a teenager, he may have had a child with a young woman back in Dublin--before his family moved to California and never returned. Now estranged, Vincent has agreed to see Cillian again at their son's wedding the following summer, but Loup introduces new complications. Soon they begin an intense affair, and somewhere between dinners made together, hazy evenings in nightclubs where Loup's band plays, and long, starry walks along the Seine, Vincent feels herself blossoming. Filled with playlists, travel journal entries, and excerpts from Cillian's novel, Half-Blown Rose traverses Paris, liminal spaces, and the messy complexities of relationships. As Cillian does all he can to win her back, Vincent must decide what she wants . . . and who she will be.

9-7-22: My 88th finished book of 2022! This book is really a love letter to Paris. I adore books set in Paris. Vincent, a jewelry maker, has found out her husband of 24 years has been lying their whole marriage about something big. So she leaves him and moves to Paris. She teaches at the local museum, makes friends and falls for a younger guy. Some of her choices bothered me but her love for Paris, art, music & literature won me over.

I run our local B&N‘s book club. With that said…if I didn‘t run it I would not have read it. I would‘ve DNF if I could. I liked nothing about this book. I had high hopes. I don‘t know if it‘s her writing style which was hard for me to read. Or if it was the characters? Whatever it is I wasn‘t a fan. #bookspin #thebigjunereadathon #travelthroughbooks #parisfrance @TheAromaofBooks @Clwojick

TheAromaofBooks Hopefully it at least leads to some interesting discussions!! 2y
KristiAhlers @TheAromaofBooks goodness I hope so! Otherwise I tortured myself for no reason. One of the books we discussed I was literally the only one who finished the book 🙄. I‘m like well next time y‘all decide it‘s too stupid to read let me know 🤣 friends don‘t let friends read dreck! 2y
TLuvs I'm about to start it for the BN bookclub... what is the deal with so many of the books they choose, being this way? 2y
KristiAhlers @TLuvs we have been asking the same question. We‘ve decided someone at corporate is working through issues by their book picks 🤣. It‘s been bad enough that we have started a rogue book club as well. Each of us taking a month and picking a book. So far that‘s been way more fun than official book. We do both. However this one was my least favorite so far 🙄 all I could think was Dustin Hoffman and The Graduate 2y

This is the third book I have read from Leesa Cross-Smith and I am 100% in for any book she writes in the future. Her writing is simple, engaging and unforgettable. This is a slow burn of a book, but oh so satisfying.

Kangaj1 I also LOVE her other two books and can't wait to read this one! 2y
