Hello, Molly!
Hello, Molly!: A Memoir | Sean Wilsey, Molly Shannon
8 posts | 19 read | 5 to read
A candid, compulsively readable, hilarious, and heartbreaking memoir of resilience and redemption by comedic genius Molly Shannon At age four, Molly Shannons world was shattered when she lost her mother, baby sister, and cousin in a car accident with her father at the wheel. Held together by her tender and complicated relationship with her grieving father, Molly was raised in a permissive household where her gift for improvising and role-playing blossomed alongside the fearlessness that would lead her to become a celebrated actress. From there, Molly ventured into the wider world of New York and Los Angeles show business, where she created her own opportunities and developed her daring and empathetic comedy. Filled with behind-the-scenes stories involving everyone from Whitney Houston to Adam Sandler to Monica Lewinsky, many told for the first time here, Hello, Molly! spans Mollys time on Saturday Night Livewhere she starred alongside Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, Cheri Oteri, Tracy Morgan, and Jimmy Fallon, among many others. At the same time, it explores with humor and candor her struggle to come to terms with the legacy of her father, a man who both fostered her gifts and drive and was left with the impossible task of raising his kids alone after the loss of her mother. Witty, winning, and told with tremendous energy and heart, Hello, Molly!, written with Sean Wilsey, sheds new and revelatory light on the life and work of one of our most talented and free-spirited performers.

Wow- did not expect this book to be so… full. Not being a huge Molly Shannon fan (prob saw her a few times on SNL and in newer shows), I thought this would be lighter and more abt random comedy. Sure, there was some of that, but also so much stuff that happened in her life, from losing her mum in a tragic accident when she was a wean, growing up kinda buck wild, and getting into a pure intense career. Quite the ride, def recommend.

If you did not read this as audio, narrated by the author, you missed out. 🎧 Molly Shannon is a FORCE. 🔥 Everyone has a story, and I‘m so glad to know the parts Molly has chosen to share of hers. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Molly Shannon survives a tragedy in childhood to become a bad ass force of nature, enthusiastic lover of LIFE (in all caps with jazz hands) and probably your imaginary best friend. You cannot be objective about this book because now you love her. At some level you realize the writing isn‘t as great as her ability to perform, but you know it‘s good because you can‘t put it down. ❤️

Glad I got around to this celebrity memoir! Molly‘s relatable and has an interesting story. There was a weird pattern of sentences repeating almost verbatim one in prior paragraphs, which was very noticeable in the #audiobook.

Molly‘s mother died in a horrific car accident when she was young, and the memoir jumps out from there showing how this early trauma affected her, especially her relationship with her dad. I loved the inside SNL bits too!

Megabooks Car accidents are kinda a CW for me and parts were more detailed than I‘d like (eg a graphic mention of her sister‘s autopsy report), so just FYI on that. 2y
BarbaraBB Nice title! 2y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I liked it too! 2y
Cinfhen This one really didn‘t work for me in terms of the quality of writing- no offense to Molly but it felt like a 4th grader was sharing her story 😝I read an ARC which didn‘t help….I think audio would have been better. 2y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I definitely think audio made it more enjoyable. I am rarely as much of a fan of celebrity memoirs in print (over audio). They have to be more literary than this for sure! 2y

Molly‘s memoir was just as delightful as her iconic Mary Katherine Gallagher sketches. I chose to listen to the audio so I could enjoy the narration of the SUPASTAH herself! this is an excellent celebrity memoir, full of touching and funny personal stories about Molly‘s family, as well as entertaining and inspiring tales about the path that led her to SNL and beyond. 5 ⭐️s!!!

this ✅s off my BOOK BY A COMEDIENNE bingo square!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A major trauma at age four left Shannon in what felt (to me) like an impossible situation. She unpacks quite a lot of family stuff here and it‘s really incredible the relationship she maintained with her dad. Shannon was among many amazing female comics who absolutely saved a floundering SNL. Loved the interesting tidbits about the inception and evolution of her marquee character Mary Katherine Gallagher. Solid memoir!

Cinfhen I really disliked this one in print as I could see that Molly isn‘t a gifted writer but I definitely felt memoir would be better if I was listening to Molly. Agreed, she had a lot to overcome. That dad!! 2y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen Listening to her definitely added a lot. 💚 2y
