Around America to Win the Vote
Around America to Win the Vote: Two Suffragists, a Kitten, and 10,000 Miles | Mara Rockliff
8 posts | 7 read | 3 to read
The author of Mesmerized delivers another fascinating glimpse into history, this time the story of two brave suffragists on a trek across America to spread the word: Votes for Women! In April 1916, Nell Richardson and Alice Burke set out from New York City in a little yellow car, embarking on a bumpy, muddy, unmapped journey ten thousand miles long. They took with them a teeny typewriter, a tiny sewing machine, a wee black kitten, and a message for Americans all across the country: Votes for Women! The womens suffrage movement was in full swing, and Nell and Alice would not let anything keep them from spreading the word about equal voting rights for women. Braving blizzards, deserts, and naysayersnot to mention a whole lot of tires stuck in the mudthe two courageous friends made their way through the cities and towns of America to further their cause. One hundred years after Nell and Alice set off on their trip, Mara Rockliff revives their spirit in a lively and whimsical picture book, with exuberant illustrations by Hadley Hooper bringing their inspiring historical trek to life.

#ucflae3419f19 This B is great for students to learn about the woman's suffrage movement in America. I would have the students read this book in a LC so that the students can have healthy discussions regarding the woman's rights movement. The UDL guideline I would use for this book is 3.3 ) Guide information processing and visualization).

Jewelwinkler The EL strategy I would use is number 28 (Provide biographies of significant men and women from different countries). After the students are done reading the book I would show them real women that fought for voting rights. DrSpalding Read this... then revise your genre to match your ESOL strategy which is spot on! “Around America to Win the Vote: Two Suffragists, a Kitten, and 10,000 Miles, by Mara Rockliff and illustrated by Hadley Hooper, is the fascinating true tale of two intrepid women who drove cross country in 1916 to build support for women's suffrage, a surging movement that won women the right to vote in 1920.”- Common Sense Media (another excellent resource) 5y

I am an equal opportunity snacker, but when I'm reading, I require tea or coffee.
