An Ear to the Ground
An Ear to the Ground: Understanding Your Garden | Ken Thompson
3 posts
How did plants get to be the way they are? Why do they have pretty flowers? How different would things have been if the wrong kind of pollinators had got the upper hand? Why are Latin names so complicated, and why Latin anyway? Why is a weed-free lawn an ecological impossibility? This entertaining book gives the answers to these questions and many more. It shows how a little botanical knowledge can bring not just better results but peace of mind, and that losing sleep over such traditional gardening bogeys as weeds, pests and pruning is not necessarily the best course. In this new edition Ken Thompson grabs the opportunity to explain why any old plant will do for companion planting - but also that it can do as much harm as good - and why planting by the moon is complete and utter nonsense.

Anyone else planning their seed schedule?

👩🏻‍🌾 I start indoors and I‘m just finalising plans. We also have a seed library at our public library so I‘m going to check that out as well. As for outdoors the last frost is sometime mid May usually - then I can move things outdoor and start planting later things out there. So far the plan is -Herbs, vegetables and trying a blueberry plant this year!

TheBookHippie I do plan to plant native plants and wildflowers this year as well in the yard! 1mo
Princess-Kingofkings I finally got around to starting my tomatoes and luffas seeds last night. My living room is glowing by grow light. 🌱 1mo
Kitta I don‘t have a garden anymore, I moved to NYC and live in an apartment, but I used to! I just grow indoor plants now 1mo
jewright I have some potatoes, peas, lettuce, and spinach in. I‘m hoping to plant onions and carrots and more of everything this weekend. Broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage are going in after Easter. 1mo

quietlycuriouskate I am, but I need to solve the badger problem: they're digging up everything I put in. I've heard that male pee deters them, but I'm not convinced that asking my husband to pee on the veg patch and flower pots is a direction I want to go in! 😂 1mo
Bookwormjillk Yes! Hopefully this weekend 🤞 1mo
lazydaizee I am going to plant some sunflower seeds soon. 1mo

My garden is my haven and I would be lost without it.
The tagged book is what first led me to organic gardening 25 years ago. I've gone on to embrace permaculture, forest and wildlife gardening.
Always room to embrace new techniques and knowledge. What books would you recommend?
