Dead Collections
Dead Collections: A Novel | Isaac Fellman
10 posts | 8 read | 12 to read
A whirlwind romance between an eccentric archivist and a grieving widow explores what it means to be at home in your own body in this clever, humorous, and heartfelt novel. When archivist Sol meets Elsie, the larger than life widow of a moderately famous television writer who's come to donate her wife's papers, there's an instant spark. But Sol has a secret: he suffers from an illness called vampirism, and hides from the sun by living in his basement office. On their way to falling in love, the two traverse grief, delve into the Internet fandom they once unknowingly shared, and navigate the realities of transphobia and the stigmas of carrying the "vampire disease." Then, when strange things start happening at the collection, Sol must embrace even more of the unknown to save himself and his job. DEAD COLLECTIONS is a wry novel full of heart and empathy, that celebrates the journey, the difficulties and joys, in finding love and comfort within our own bodies.

The car is in the shop for a much-needed oil change and brake check. How, oh how, will I pass the time? 😁

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I don't mind the going and waiting, but when it's time for the 60k mile services & parts replacement, and they offer me a courtesy ride home and back, it hurts the wallet. 😬 9mo

This is one of those stories where nothing much happens until suddenly it does - in this case, Sol - a trans man archivist who also happens to be a vampire takes possession of a collection of a late tv writer that completely changes his life.

There are lots of light moments, it is for the most part - a love story but there is also moments of bleakness in the form of anti trans discrimination, the stigma of vampirism, grief and loneliness.

A fresh take on vampirism and finding one‘s self. A look into an archival mind and the impact belongings have on those who own them and those they are passed along to. The weight objects hold is portrayed heartbreakingly (in a good way).

I've read some great books in 2022, but this delightfully weird novel about a trans vampire archivist is my favourite so far. An eccentric romance; a fascinating character study; conversations about life stories, archives, music, fanfiction and fandom, vampirism, being trans, and grief; a supernatural archival mystery. A very unique take on vampirism. Beautifully and thoughtfully written. Awesome #audiobook narration by Dani Martinek.

khooliha As soon as I finished this book I thought "If this isn't one of my favorite books of the year then I'm going to have an incredible year of reading." 2y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @khooliha oh I have no doubt this will be one of my favourites! 2y

Me, through this whole book: 🥺😭🥺😭
Gosh, I loved it

"Not that I was ever really an adolescent, but I had the tenderness of one. That's what it's like to be a trans child and not know it. You have all the fragility of adolescence, but none of its resilience, the clever cartilage that always grows back."

Adding a couple more trans books to the pile - Manhunt is my horror book club's next pick, and I'm hoping to get to Dead Collections ASAP
