A slow burn political fantasy with rich world building. Serves as a good setup for the duology, but will require a patient read. Slow & steady pace with lots of world & character setup. Listed as adult, but reads more new adult. Set in an interesting Greek & Russian influenced world & centered around a system of tense political factions headed by human “gods“. The ending leaves things in a bit of a cliffhanger. I'm anxiously awaiting the sequel.

The book started a little slow, but got more interesting as the story went. I was able to guess some of the reveals, but there was enough going on to keep me interested to the end.

Look at that! A two-bingo month! What an accomplishment! I‘d like to thank the academy, and @TheAromaofBooks , and uh… the fact that I had two DNFs on the same line 😂

sprainedbrain Nice! 😂 2y

SO. GOOD.

This was (almost) everything I hoped for in a Rory Power adult fantasy. Deep and dark and twisty, with rich, creative worldbuilding and fathomless characters. Just a touch of body horror. She uses tropes I love from fantasy and mythology and twists them in new and intriguing ways. Can‘t wait for the sequel!

(The almost: not queer enough.)

shanaqui Ohh, this is interesting to hear. Had heard not-so-good things from a blog I follow, but the cover was tempting me... 🤔 2y
Clare-Dragonfly @shanaqui I did notice that the Litsy rating is surprisingly low! Obviously not for everyone—but what book is? 2y

"???, ??? ??? ?????, ??? ??? ???? ?????? ?? ????? ????. ????, ?????? ?????? ???, ??? ????????? ???? ?????? ? ????? ???? ???? ?????????? ?? ??."⁣

The world building is phenomenally effortless. The magic system is nothing I have ever read before but also seems innate at the same time. The politics absolutely bring this book home for me.

Coffee that is still hot (as opposed to room temperature), a book, and cat snuggles....the perfect way to kick of my spring break.

I found In A Garden of Burning Gold to be a well-plotted and fantastical entry into the adult fantasy genre. Readers that enjoy high fantasy along with political intrigue, complicated family dynamics and powerful magic will enjoy this novel.
4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Mehso-so

In this Greek-inspired fantasy, the adult debut of Wilder Girls author Rory Power, families rule with the power of saints or gods, and siblings find themselves on opposing sides of a brewing war. The world building was very unique and interesting to me, and I would recommend for fans of court politics in their fantasy but the family dynamics didn‘t feel developed enough for me.

underground_bks @Michael_Gee the cover really is gorgeous! The kitty was at my local cat cafe! Our bookstore does videos of adoptable cats each week with our current reads :) 2y
