Cecily
Cecily: 'a STARTLING HEROINE' Sarah Moss | Annie Garthwaite
8 posts | 5 read | 12 to read
"Rebellion?" The word is a spark. They can start a fire with it, or smother it in their fingertips. She chooses to start a fire. You are born high, but marry a traitor's son. You bear him twelve children, carry his cause and bury his past. You play the game, against enemies who wish you ashes. Slowly, you rise. You are Cecily. But when the King who governs you proves unfit, what then? Loyalty or treason - death may follow both. The board is set. Time to make your first move. Told through the eyes of its greatest unseen protagonist, this astonishing debut plunges you into the blood and exhilaration of the first days of the Wars of the Roses, a war as women fight it.

Garthwaite has put Cecily in the room! Her voice is loud her influence deep and her intelligence instrumental in shaping the royal succession. She‘s bold, creative and daring. She suffers loss and her heart is wounded but her ambition maintains constant. This is a fab creation of her fictional life - the lens through which we should view all history - one where the woman are key players

Loved it. Exactly how I imagined Cecily. What a woman.
I also loved that the author wrote this in her 50s after having a very different career path. Her love of history and the stories and characters shines through.

squirrelbrain Great review Trish! 2y

Mitch I‘m reading this too! My little local bookstore is hosting her in the village church next month as Cecily has links to the village! 2y

In parts a case of “it‘s not you, it‘s me” with this one; I‘ve read a lot around this time in history and I think I wanted something fresher and more modern.
That said it is an engagingly told story of Cecily Neville and the power and political struggles she engages in, as well as her husband. In the final third you are completely absorbed by her as she rises up; furious, proud and determined to protect her children at all costs.

TrishB I‘m intrigued! Love this historical period too. 2y
JillR @trishb this to me felt very Philippa Gregory which is not a complaint but I feel I‘ve exhausted that style, and for some reason I was expecting something different from this, perhaps because I‘d seen it reviewed by people and stocked in shops where perhaps I‘d not expect to see Philippa Gregory, does that make sense? Really interesting woman though and sent me off on various internet searches for more! 2y
TrishB Thanks 👍🏻 she is a really interesting woman. I don‘t like PG books though so I‘ll probably give it a miss, but at least I know! 2y
JillR @trishb I‘ve enjoyed them in the past but haven‘t actively sought any out more recently if you know what I mean. I have read reviews raving about this book and the writing but tbh I couldn‘t see it went beyond PG… 2y

This was a fantastic historical fiction read, about Cecily Neville. This part of English history I find read fascinating. I hadn't read much about Cecily Neville, it's usually about her sons Edward Vl and Henry. It shows Cecily Neville as a strong woman for the times.
