The Woman from Uruguay
The Woman from Uruguay | Pedro Mairal
2 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
From acclaimed Argentine author Pedro Mairal and Man Booker International-winning translator Jennifer Croft, the unforgettable story of two would-be lovers over the course of a single day. Lucas Pereyra, an unemployed writer in his forties, embarks on a day trip from Buenos Aires to Montevideo to pick up fifteen thousand dollars in cash. An advance due to him on his upcoming novel, the small fortune might mean the solution to his problems, most importantly the tension he has with his wife. While she spends her days at work and her nights out on the town-with a lover, perhaps, he doesn't know for sure-Lucas is stuck at home all day staring at the blank page, caring for his son Maiko and fantasizing about the one thing that keeps him going: the woman from Uruguay whom he met at a conference and has been longing to see ever since. But that woman, Magal Guerra Zabala, is a free spirit with her own relationship troubles, and the day they spend together in this beautiful city on the beach winds up being nothing like Lucas predicted. The constantly surprising, moving story of this dramatically transformative day in their lives, The Woman from Uruguay is both a gripping narrative and a tender, thought-provoking exploration of the nature of relationships. An international bestseller published in fourteen countries, it is the masterpiece of one of the most original voices in Latin American literature today.

A man goes from #Argentina to #Uruguay to pick up cash to pay back his wife and oh yeah, see the woman he‘s been having an emotional affair with. Guy walking around Montevideo intoxicated with 15k USD on his person…I think you know where this is going. 😏 But then the last 15 pages happen, and it‘s all, where did this come from?? A #GoodNotGreat start to #ReadingTheAmericas2023. This is also my #bookspin.

Librarybelle Way to start the challenge! 1y
BarbaraBB This does NOT sound like a Meg book! 1y

squirrelbrain Great start! Are you using it for both countries? 1y
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! 1y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB lol! I enjoyed it well enough, but I wouldn‘t have sought it out without the challenge, and isn‘t that the point?? 1y
Megabooks @squirrelbrain yes, I‘ve decided this time that I can use books for more than one country. 1y
Megabooks @TheAromaofBooks 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 1y
BarbaraBB @Megabooks You‘re right, that‘s exactly the point 😀 1y
squirrelbrain Good call Meg; I may do the same, go a bit easier on myself. 😁 Although I think I‘ve identified books for most countries already but if some overlap, I can maybe drop a few. 1y

This novel is about one day for an Argentinian writer who travels to Uruguay to benefit from the exchange rate and to meet up with a woman he met at a conference. He of course has a family at home, but suspects his wife has been having an affair. Most of the novel takes place in Montevideo, which is a daytrip via ferry from Buenos Aires.

This is translated by Jennifer Croft. I wonder how many languages she can translate from!
