Pandora: An immersive and gripping historical novel set in Georgian London | Susan Stokes-Chapman
13 posts | 13 read | 20 to read
A pure pleasure of a novel set in Georgian London, where the discovery of a mysterious ancient Greek vase sets in motion conspiracies, revelations and romance. There is a fine line between coincidence and fate... London, 1799. Dora Blake is an aspiring jewellery artist who lives with her uncle in what used to be her parents' famed shop of antiquities. When a mysterious Greek vase is delivered, Dora is intrigued by her uncle's suspicious behaviour and enlists the help of Edward Lawrence, a young antiquarian scholar. Edward sees the ancient vase as key to unlocking his academic future. Dora sees it as a chance to restore the shop to its former glory, and to escape her nefarious uncle. But what Edward discovers about the vase has Dora questioning everything she has believed about her life, her family, and the world as she knows it. As Dora uncovers the truth she starts to realise that some mysteries are buried, and some doors are locked, for a reason. Gorgeously atmospheric and deliciously page-turning, Pandora is a story of secrets and deception, love and fulfilment, fate and hope.

Set in 1800‘s and following a young woman & her shady uncle who have an antiquities shop. Story centers on a Greek pithos (vase) & secret treasure. Not a lot of twists, FMC doesn‘t have a lot of agency, low stakes. Not a great payoff at the end, just okay.

First dnf of 2024 😕just not for me all too bland and with a TBR like mine it‘s time to get harsh and after 64 pages if it‘s not cutting it then that‘s that !

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join in if you want!

Strong writing and interesting characters and yet I often found it difficult to pick this book back up once I set it down. The detailed descriptions set the scenes beautifully but so much time was spent on everything other than the mystery which was then resolved so quickly and conveniently at the end with some of it a bit too overblown for me to swallow. I am eager to read with she writes next because I did enjoy her writing style so much.

Pickpick

Set in London in 1799, Dora works in her uncle's shop which used to belong to her parents. A Greek vase arrives and Dora is intrigued by it. Her uncle is acting suspicious so she asks Edward Lawrence to help with discovering where it came from. It has romance, secrets, greek mythology and mystery I really enjoyed it.

A rare guest stopping by. Sitting outside with my ARC and Litsy mug to catch a few rays of sunshine.

Book was published two days ago. My signed copy should be lying on @squirrelbrain's shelf. 😁

squirrelbrain Maybe it is…. Maybe it‘s in my sticky little paws…! Only kidding, but just a thought… do you want me to check it *is* a signed copy, just in case? Were any of the others special editions / signed? 2y
julesG @squirrelbrain Yes, please do check. After they mixed up the special edition in Chester, it might be best. The others were just ordinary copies. 2y
