Murder Most Fair | Anna Lee Huber
10 posts | 6 read | 5 to read
All is far from quiet on the home front in USA Today bestselling author Anna Lee Huber's captivating mystery series, in which former Secret Service agent Verity Kent receives a visitor--who is being trailed by a killer... November 1919. A relaxing few weeks by the seaside with her husband, Sidney, could almost convince Verity Kent that life has returned to the pleasant rhythm of pre-war days. Then Verity's beloved Great-Aunt Ilse lands on their doorstep. After years in war-ravaged Germany, Ilse has returned to England to repair her fragile health--and to escape trouble. Someone has been sending her anonymous threats, and Verity's Secret Service contacts can only provide unsettling answers. Even deep in the Yorkshire Dales, where she joins Verity's family for the holidays, Ilse encounters difficulties. Normally peaceful neighbors are hostile, seeking someone to blame for the losses they've endured. When Ilse's maid is found dead, Verity must uncover whether this is anti-German sentiment taken to murderous lengths, or whether there is a more personal motive at work. Could Verity's shadowy nemesis, Lord Ardmore, be involved? And if so, how much closer to home will the blow land when he inevitably strikes again?

Book 5 in the Verity Kent series - a series I usually like, but this one was really disappointing. The first half or so was extremely slow without much of a mystery until the second part.

The mystery is only part of the story here. Anna Lee Huber‘s description of Verity‘s attempts to come to terms with her brother‘s death during the war is the true star of this book!

This is the 5th book in the Verity Kent Mystery Series & it keeps up the same high standard as the other books in the series.
The events take place in her home town in Yorkshire, in 1919, but much of the story still relates back to her time as a spy during the war. Verity really is a strong character, but in this book we see more of her vulnerable side as she returns home & has to deal with unresolved grief for her brother who died 4 years before.

Andrew65 Unsurprisingly whilst she is in Yorkshire a murder takes place that both her and her husband set about solving, but not without some danger along the way. Beyond the scene Verity wonders if her Nemesis, Lord Ardmore could be involved. 👇 2y
Andrew65 These are really well written books where you get a good feel of the times they are set in. Great plotting and great characterisation adds to the book, and I am happy to strongly recommend this book. If you enjoy historical mysteries with a strong female lead character do read this series but do make sure you read them in order. 👇 2y

Finishing off #AnyWayYouReadathon by reading this book. A perfect read fir Remembrance Day, where they are in the graveyard talking about the amount of deaths in World War I and the impact on local villages. Currently 1004 pages read, out of a target of 1000 pages. 🥳

I think I like this fifth installment of the Verity Kent series the best so far. In addition to a good murder mystery, we learn so much more about Verity, watch her relationship with Sidney develop, and meet her fascinating family. This one is less dependent on the thread of the previous stories than the last book, which I thought detracted from that one. Huber‘s writing is excellent, as always. Recommend.

Late to the party, but thanks @Eggs for the invite.

1. @Alisnazzy got a promotion, and our grandson is back from spending the summer with his other grandmother in NY.
2. Around here, Thanksgiving if we‘re lucky.

The fifth installment of the Verity Kent mystery series, it‘s set in November 1919 in the Yorkshire Dales. Verity and her husband Sidney have returned to her family home for a holiday visit after a 5-year absence escorting her great-aunt who has survived a perilous journey from Germany. I especially enjoyed this one because we finally meet Verity‘s family and see how they all relate to each other. Verity has stayed away because of the 🔻

robinb bittersweet/painful memories her home and family evoke of her beloved brother who was killed in the war, as well as her mother‘s constant fault-finding with her. I also loved to see she and Sidney grow closer as he strives to help her through this difficult time. The mystery itself (involving the murder of her aunt‘s young maid and features prejudice among other things) 🔻 3y
robinb serves as almost a side note to the emotional family tensions. Another well-done addition to a favorite series. 4.5/5⭐️ 3y
