The Almost Legendary Morris Sisters
The Almost Legendary Morris Sisters: A True Story of Family Fiction | Julie Klam
8 posts | 4 read | 18 to read
New York Times-bestselling author Julie Klam's funny and moving story of the Morris sisters, distant relations with mysterious pasts. Ever since she was young, Julie Klam has been fascinated by the Morris sisters, cousins of her grandmother. According to family lore, early in the twentieth century the sisters' parents decided to move the family from Eastern Europe to Los Angeles so their father could become a movie director. On the way, their pregnant mother went into labor in St. Louis, where the baby was born and where their mother died. The father left the children in an orphanage and promised to send for them when he settled in California--a promise he never kept. One of the Morris sisters later became a successful Wall Street trader and advised Franklin Roosevelt. The sisters lived together in New York City, none of them married or had children, and one even had an affair with J. P. Morgan. The stories of these independent women intrigued Klam, but as she delved into them to learn more, she realized that the tales were almost completely untrue. The Almost Legendary Morris Sisters is the revealing account of what Klam discovered about her family--and herself--as she dug into the past. The deeper she went into the lives of the Morris sisters, the slipperier their stories became. And the more questions she had about what actually happened to them, the more her opinion of them evolved. Part memoir and part confessional, and told with the wit and honesty that are hallmarks of Klam's books, The Almost Legendary Morris Sisters is the fascinating and funny true story of one writer's journey into her family's past, the truths she brings to light, and what she learns about herself along the way.

Enjoyed this genealogical memoir quite a bit. I‘m endlessly fascinated by stories of people digging into their family history so this was right up my street. Illustrates how easily the truth can be lost and fiction becomes the accepted family lore.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This totally makes me want to research my family! These four infamously single, successful sisters were Klam‘s grandma‘s cousins. She set out on a journey to glean more about the Morris Sisters - why they never married nor had children; how their wealth came to fruition. Plenty of family lore existed, but how much was true? She uncovered some surprising missing details. Absolutely fascinating read. And I loved Klam‘s dry wit!

MallenNC I‘m so glad you liked this. I just got this book and am looking forward to reading it. 3y

🎧👟 It‘s hot AF, y‘all. I should‘ve walked earlier. On the positive, this is an interesting listen so far!

#audiowalk

KathyWheeler I‘ve been walking either early in the day or late because of the heat. It gets down to 85 from the 90s of earlier in the day. 3y
britt_brooke @KathyWheeler That‘s a good call. I keep getting distracted in the mornings. 😅 I need to walk or ride my spin bike (which is in our garage) right after I drop my boys off at school. I know if it‘s this unbearable in TN, it‘s bad down where you are! 3y
KathyWheeler @britt_brooke I keep waiting until 6:00pm, except when I work in the library instead of from home — then I‘ll do a quick walk at 7:30am as well. I could go to the gym and be in ac, but I get bored inside. All our rain is making it difficult to be outside. Are you anywhere near all that awful flooding up there? (edited) 3y
britt_brooke @KathyWheeler The flooding was about 75 miles west of us. It‘s just awful. 💔 On top of all the other tremendous loss, their schools are destroyed. I just dropped off a few backpacks to a friend whose church has partnered with the Dept of Educatiom to provide schools supplies and such to that county. Our school district‘s maintenance staff has been there helping clean up debris this week. Glad to see Tennesseans coming together. 3y
KathyWheeler @britt_brooke I rarely watch the news but even I have seen the pictures of the devastation up there. It looks awful. I‘m glad people are rallying around each other and helping. 3y

I blew through this audio/ it‘s very short and very engaging. Journalist Julie Klam is endearing & I enjoyed her narration. Like almost every Jewish family I know, everyone has a story to tell and EVERY family has a relative who defies convention and is a larger than life presence. Julie had 4 cousins, spinster sisters who were awed & admired throughout the decades. Curious to learn what was fact & what was fiction she undergoes a 3 yr quest.👇🏼

Cinfhen This book was far from perfect and I felt the author repeated a lot of information. She seemed to fill the pages with unnecessary discoveries which didn‘t add to the narrative. I did enjoy this hybrid of Jewish genealogy, Holocaust history and early 20th century chronicles. Still a pick but with some reservations. 3y
BarbaraBB A great review! 3y

That‘s one thing I‘ve been worried about. 3y

The four Morris sisters are legends in Julie‘s family. The immigrated from Romania around 1900 and three lived into their 90s. So much has been passed down about them: their mom died giving birth to the youngest, one had an affair with JP Morgan, another met with FDR during the war. But what is true? Julie sets out on a journey that takes her to Romania, St. Louis, and the Hamptons to find out the real story of her fascinating relatives!

Cinfhen I‘m SO INTRIGUED!!! I might splurge and buy the book!! Do u do print or audio?? 3y
