Horizontal Vertigo
Horizontal Vertigo: A City Called Mexico | Juan Villoro
2 posts | 6 to read
At once intimate and wide-ranging, and as enthralling, surprising, and vivid as the place itself, this is a uniquely eye-opening tour of one of the great metropolises of the world, and its largest Spanish-speaking city. Horizontal Vertigo: The title refers to the fear of ever-impending earthquakes that led Mexicans to build their capital city outward rather than upward. With the perspicacity of a keenly observant flneur, Juan Villoro wanders through Mexico City seemingly without a plan, describing people, places, and things while brilliantly drawing connections among them. In so doing he reveals, in all its multitudinous glory, the vicissitudes and triumphs of the city's cultural, political, and social history: from indigenous antiquity to the Aztec period, from the Spanish conquest to Mexico City today--one of the world's leading cultural and financial centers. In this deeply iconoclastic book, Villoro organizes his text around a recurring series of topics: "Living in the City," "City Characters," and "Shocks, Crossings, and Ceremonies." What he achieves, miraculously, is a stunning, intriguingly coherent meditation on Mexico City's genius loci, its spirit of place.

I ended up returning the Horizontal Vertigo audiobook and buying it in print. I just wasn‘t absorbing it as an audiobook, and I‘m really interested in learning more about Mexico City.

The mug arrived today too. So cute, right? It‘s from Bad Bananas on Amazon, and they strongly implied the design was etched into the mug. Nope, it‘s a cheap decal! Like so cheap it rubs off when you touch it. Now, whether I like the mug alone enough to keep it. 🤔

TrishB That‘s so annoying with the mug! 3y
ShelleyBooksie Bummer about the bookmark!! 3y
kspenmoll So sorry about the mug! Disappointing! 3y
CBee I would totally reach out to them and see what they say. That‘s super disappointing!! 3y
Megabooks @TrishB @ShelleyBooksie @kspenmoll @CBee I decided to keep the mug. I really like the size, shape, and color, regardless of whether the decal comes off. My dad suggested that I put on a new one that says, “My dad is fantastic!” Lol! 😂 He is pretty great though. 3y

#ImpulseBuy #audiobook

Just got this new release because a friend from high school lives in Mexico City. I‘ve been really curious after seeing all her pictures. She says Villoro is a very famous author there. 👍🏻

Cinfhen I‘m curious but not entirely sold.... I‘ll be waiting 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen it‘s up next...I think. I have less than an hour left in Mariah Carey‘s book. This is the time of the month where I can never decide what to read next. Plus I‘m not a fan of Wednesday‘s! 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I listened to 20%. I wasn‘t retaining, likely due to the unfamiliar accent of the narrator, but I was enjoying it, and since it‘s set up in essays, I ordered a physical copy to read slowly. Ended up returning the audiobook. We‘ll see how I do with a physical copy. 3y
Cinfhen Good idea!! Audible makes it so easy!!!! 3y
